I think we need to hope our international scouting gets better as well.

He pitches in the low nineties

This has nothing to do with Matusz, but if the Nats draft Smoak, I am going to be angry.

I like Smoak a lot, and I do not like the Nats.

Make you a bet we go with a pitcher in Round 2.

After an initial letdown because I was high on Smoak, I really think Matusz is a great pick. He could easily be MLB ready by 2010 and is already very polished. He's a good bet to be a front of the rotation starter within the next few years. He also makes it much easier to trade a pitcher for middle infield help. I hope he signs quickly and gets right to Aberdeen.

Guys, let's remember to make comments about the O's pick in his own thread!!!! this is for general talk about until the pick then we switch to the players thread. I'd hate to have all your comments about how bad this pick was unavailable for crow eating in a few years.

They took Marrero last year. Would they add Smoak this year?

Well, this pick provides all the more reasoning to flip Cabrera or Guthrie for a blue chip SS

No one has selected Smoak yet. What's the problem with these others teams?

Come on guys. It is a great pick. This is what the Orioles of yesteryear was always built on great pitching. Just keep adding great pitching because some of them will be Mike Mussina, some will be Chris Smith, some will be Ben McDonald and some will be Adam Loewen.

You have to like this kid, even if you wanted Smoak. A legitimate lefty, potential All-Star with excellent command. What's not to like?

Cheap pitching is what we need to bridge the gap between us and the Yankees, Boston, Tampa and Toronto.

Add the hitters through trades and free agency and later round development.

It's not like Smoak is any more of a sure thing than Matusz.
WHAT hitter have we ever developed in the later rounds in the last dozen years? Other than Markakis, and Roberts, what hitter have we developed in the early rounds in the last dozen years?

    Fair enough, Tony. I'll behave.
