Bought the new Hold Steady album, "Stay Positive", today.
It's great.

From this day forward, I answer only to the name 'Buttercup.'
El Presidente and First Assistant Jester, Fellowship of the Fistbump *fistbump*
"Drek take your skirt off and go and sit in the unairconditioned room and take your midol with you. *fistbump*" - Gallden, stompin a mudhole.

I've umm... never heard of them. Describe?

Midwestern post-punk mixed with big 70s (think, say, Thin Lizzy meets the Boss) influence. Highly literate sung-spoke lyrics. Big hybrid of sacred/profane in the lyrics...think saints/sinners and angels/addicts. Lots of Catholic iconography.
As for the album, I've had it for a couple of weeks now. I think Constructive Summer is the best song but like Sequestered in Memphis.
That said, it's probably my third favorite THS album:
1. Separation Sunday
2. Boys and Girls in America
3. Stay Positive
4. Almost Killed Me
I think Pitchfork got it right with an 8.3 - the last two albums were sublime. This one? Merely better than 90% of the other albums out there.
