Cosh Leaves Maryland!
LINK
This is awesome news IMO. I wanted him gone anyways. It makes you wonder if there was a little tension there between him and Ralph after those on-field conflicts.
Any thoughts on possible replacements? Will we look inside the organization?

Actually, I think its time for Friedgen to go, too.

Cosh
GREAT NEWS. As I recall his K State defense was below par also. Never understood why F selected him, maybe his DC connections.

I wasn't a fan of Cosh's defense but I wish him and his family well.
I really hope we can bring in a guy who wants to play smashmouth ball and will attack, attack, attack!

You guys really know how to make a guy feel confident!!
I haven't seen any stats from the past 3 years, were his defenses really that bad? Can't be worse than what we were this year, about 110 in points per game and 117 in yards per game. Pathetic.
FYI, he was only linebackers coach, not D.C., for 2 years, 2004-2005, which, coincidentally, were Snyder's last two years, two of his worst as KSU coach.

His defense is painful to watch. It's very passive in that its that "bend but don't break" type. There's not much creative blitzing and little pressure on the QB.
The other thing I noticed isn't just the scheming problem but also that the players wouldn't seem to be coached all that well. Lots of missed tackles, arm tacking and poor angles of pursuit. DB's not looking back for the ball.
Overall I think that Fridge probably made the hire for Cosh's DC connections thinking that a young "go getter" could grow into the position. Unfortunately b/c he was calling the offensive plays he couldn't be as hands on with him as he would have liked thus Cosh ended up getting in way over his head.

This is an early Christmas present... and further proof that miracles do (ocassionally) happen.
don't let the door hit you on the way out, chris...

Well, it sounds like it may be more of the same here then. Although, if it's a "bend but don't break," that's better than what we had this year. I don't even think our defense bent, it just snapped.
Hopefully Snyder will be able to help with the "not being well-coached" problem. That was one of our main problems this year, too. Not only were our players not in the right spots, when they were there, they couldn't make the plays. I'm guessing Snyder will allow the O.C. to call the plays, allowing him to monitor both sides of the ball more.

I wish there was something overly positive to say about Cosh. His defenses over the past few years have been devistatingly disappointing... often head scratching... very little penetration... ugh.
I can say, though, that our corners played better this year than in years past, imo, so that might be one positive... we've had some pretty bad corner play during the Friedgen era... but I'm not sure how much influence Cosh had on this.
Good luck and we GLADLY pass him along to you.

Well, I hope it works out, but it's not sounding too promising.
However, today, it was announced that Cosh was named co-defensive coordinator. So it doesn't sound like he will have free reign over the defense. No idea who the other co-d.c. will be; rumors (and that's all they are as of now) are that Vic Koenning, former Clemson d.c., is in the running, but it appears LSU may also want him.

K State
Co D/C's sounds like a recipe for failure. There always needs to be someone in charge whether it be on a bb team, fb team or in business. I can't imagine a QUALITY coach coming to K State if they know that they will be a Co D/C.

I wasn't his biggest fan, but I bear no ill-will to Cosh. A lot of times I think he got the best out of a unit that could have been worse. For instance this year his secondary was Terrell Skinner and a bunch of average guys, especially once Barnes went down. Wiseman and Carroll are ok, but there's not an offense in the country that worried about how they were going to get their passing games going against those guys.
Likewise, the D-line was generally small and not very effective. As a unit, the linebackers were good, though not ever consistently great.
I'm not necessarily going to miss Cosh, but I saw the same limitations he did and I'm not going to trash him. And Cosh was the single biggest reason why Maryland beat Clemson and Wake, and he doesn't get nearly enough credit for the win over Cal either. The defense was outstanding during the first 3 quarters of that game.

I agree with that; I'm not really sure how that's going to work. I think that whoever else comes in will be "more in charge" than Cosh, and maybe Cosh was given the title in case there is nobody better. But I agree, it's hard enough getting quality coaches here, they're going to want to be in charge if they do come.
Well, that's a better report than others I've been hearing. He sounds like a good guy, hopefully it works out.

I didn't mean to imply that Cosh isn't a good person. I don't know him from Adam... he could be the nicest person you've ever met --- or a raging lunatic. Don't know. I certainly wish him well... would never wish ill will on the guy... and I hope K State can use him to regain some of their glory. Most certainly, I have read that many coaches like work with him (didn't he coach for Saban at one point? I think I remember reading an article where Saban just gushed about Cosh).
What I can comment on is my complete and utter frustration with the Maryland defensive unit. If you take the attacking stunt filled defenses that were used early in Friedgen's tenure (they were nasty)... and compare them to what Cosh put out there... there is really no comparison. Hopefully the next DC here in MD will put some attack back in the D.

I wasn't meaning that everyone was saying he was a bad person, I was just commenting on how the football-related reports haven't sounded too good, and if he doesn't work out as d/c, at least he sounds like a good enough person. Sorry if it came off the wrong way.
And yes, Cosh worked under Saban at Michigan State in 1998.
