    Sonnastine off the market?

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8...-meetings-blog

Didn't see this anywhere, but Edwin Jackson is close to being shipped to the Tigers for Matt Joyce, meaning Sonnastine is probably off the market. Can't see a Sonny/Scott,Reimold deal working now.

Not to be a downer in a really optomistic Tex time, but this takes away one of the last clearly available trade pieces to upgrade the starting pitching, and FA doesn't look too hot either. Burnett has been offered 91 mil from the Yanks , and he's reportedly down to choosing between the MFY and the Braves. So right now it's down to:

Kawakami, Uehara (looks good for us getting 1 or 2)
Marquis (who knows what's going on here)

Garland, Looper, Byrd (we've shown interest in them, but seem too pricy/ bad at pitching )

Sheets, Wolf, Moyer (don't seem likely, since we haven't said anything about them. Also, they might get priced out of our range as well)

So, what's left there for trading?

Sonnanstine wasn't all that great of a target. He put up some good numbers, but I'm not so sure how likely he is to repeat those. He'll probably have some success in huge Tiger Stadium though.

I think we land Kawakami and Uehera. Our pitching should be much better come opening day 2010.

    Matusz
    Guthrie
    Tillman
    Arrieta
    Uehera

Sign me up for a much better rotation at a fraction of the cost. That rotation costs us about $13 Million verus one year of Burnett at $18.5 Million.

Sonnastine is still on the Rays, and Edwin Jackson is going to the Tigers. It's just less likely now that the Rays would be willing to trade him since they've opened up a spot for Price.

Sonnastine is relevant because he was one of the few surplus starting pitchers that could have been had in a trade. Not many teams have depth like the Rays have at starting pitching and are willing to trade from it. Not saying it was likely, but he was an OH favorite for some.

Sonnastine for Scott only ever made sense on this board anyway, so nothing really has changed. The Rays were never going to trade a Sonnastine, who they value over Jackson, for a Scott when they can get a Matt Joyce for Jackson.
