Pardon me for my error. I meant to type high school, but instead I had a mental lapse and typed college.
Of course he's entitled to his opinion. The only reason I typed anything in response was because I have more respect for Tony than most of the other posters on the board. I don't know him personally. This opinion is solely based upon reading some of his previous posts, the work he puts into the site (especially the minor league side), and the fact that he has served in the army (in whatever capacity that may have been).
If Tony had told us long ago that he thought Teixeira was a "bum" or that we shouldn't sign him because, "there's a reason teams kept trading him and moving him and part of it was the fact the guy is all about himself," I could understand. In fact, I would applaud him for stating his opinion even though it would go against the many Orioles fans who desperately wanted him to sign with us. To say it after he signs with the NYY seems a bit petty, even if what Tony says about the guy is accurate. That's my opinion.
I guess you never entertained the notion that his "dream come true" comments about playing for the O's could at least partially be a public relations tactic or negotiating ploy.
And I guess you discount the fact that the NYY offerred more money and that they offer a much better chance to compete annually. Or that maybe he didn't really want to play for an organization that many feel has been dysfunctional for quite some time and hasn't even posted a winning record for over a decade.
Forget about the money even.
Do you conclude that highly touted local high school basketball players that are recruited by Maryland but choose to attend UNC or Duke instead are front runners? Do you think that local football players that choose USC or Florida over Maryland made a punk move?
If you state that your conclusion is an easy one, I would say that it is an ill-conceived conclusion.
Reread my original post. It was not meant to be inflammatory. Obviously it hurt your feelings. (That's my easy conclusion.)
And if you call yourself an editor, you really shouldn't need to use CAPS and emoticons to express yourself.Last edited by oriole_way; 01-07-2009 at 03:33 PM.

My question is, if it had cost us the 10/200 mm+ to get him, how would that have affected his legacy? I agree with the way AM played it. If he had come to B'more because he wanted to and accepted say an 8/170-80ish offer, it would have been great. But if it took 10/230 then he's just another mercenary and screw his legacy.

He's become the new poster boy for the modern FA merc. Which means...you can't listen to a damn word out of his mouth, you have to judge him by his actions.

Of course you don't, because you are that kid from Texas. you don't understand because you are not from here. You weren't born into hating the Yankees like most of us were. I almost quit little league one year because I was drafted by the Yankees in the 10-12 league. I spent two years hating the fact I was a Yankee until I was traded to the Red Sox. Back then, they were certainly the lesser evil so I was happy. I was even more happier when I pitched a complete game against them and beat the kid I was traded for by hitting a three-run homer off him in a 3-2 win.
Even beating the little league Yankees was something to be cheered for when I grew up.
I'm not knocking you, but I can understand why you don't get it.

I report. Fair and balanced. You decide

How's this? Tex, you aren't even from Texas you big phony. What a wuss, hiding behind your wife as an excuse for dissing your hometown. Maybe $180 million will buy you a new set of stugots, you backstabbing rat [illegitimately conceived], son of [a female dog] , mother [lover].Last edited by TonySoprano; 01-07-2009 at 04:53 PM.

Well said. It won't matter though. The Yankees, as always, are going to learn they cannot BUY the World Series. Last year they couldn't even buy the division, the saps. Given the absolutely over-the-top nature of the spending spree this year - practically BUYING AN ENTIRE ELITE ROTATION and of course getting the best young premium position player in baseball in his prime... they might actually make it to the series.
But you can't actually say what they're doing is smart, or even particularly interesting (like, say, the A's approach with Billy Beane... or even MacPhail's sanguine operations). They're just buying the best roto guys available and gunnin' it.
Good for them. But just like the series with the Diamondbacks, they'll lose the WS this fall in heartbreaking fashion...

Don't know if this has already been posted or not, but if you read this and don't want to burn a Teixeira effigy....well, just read it.

Edit: I see JTreas posted this way back on page 4 or so.....but you can read it again and get even madder.Last edited by olehippi; 01-07-2009 at 05:13 PM.

You didn't type "college", thus the misunderstanding.
You're entitled to your opinion as well. I personally think Tony took the high road by keeping it to himself. There was nothing good that could come from making what he's heard public before now, especially because it's not something for which sources could be comfortably revealed. Instead, Tony let things play out and Teixeira seems to have proved/be proving his sources right. You think it's petty, I think it was for the best.
Absolutely I considered it. It may be one of those necessary evils and you may be okay with deception for personal position/gain, but I'm not. He could have chosen a different PR tactic by answering with ambiguity to the degree that it might not have made the author's final revision.
You're missing the point. I understand why he ultimately signed with the Yankees (money and competition), but to go from "playing for the Orioles would be a dream come true" before signing to "I loved going to games at Oriole Park in my Yankees hat" after the fact is...well...a punk move.
No way. It's an apples to oranges comparison. In most cases you're talking about 16, 17, and 18 year-old kids who associate with other late-teenaged kids picking a college. Teixeira is a 28-year-old multi-millionaire who has spent the better part of the last five years around other adults. Odds are he's crossed paths with someone influential in some clubhouse that would have set a good example for him in terms of how to protect his public image, both to his current fanbase and his hometown team. A high school kid picking a college is a whole different animal.
I called it like I saw it. It was a punk move. Not the whole signing with the Yankees part, but what he said before and after the fact.
Don't flatter yourself. I was simply defending an opinion with which I firmly agreed. My feelings weren't hurt despite the inflammatory tone in your post.
I appreciate the feedback!
In the future, I PROMISE to make a more concerted effort to refrain from using caps and emoticons when expressing my opinion. Here I thought this was a message board!
