Water Heater went up
I discovered last night that my water heater is on its last leg (water leaking on the floor). Anyone have any recommendations for a good replacement? I will tend to stay away from Sears after my recent wash machine issues with them. Any help would be appreciated!

I got one from Home Depot. It was a 10-year Warranty one. It went up within 2 years (leaked around the inlet) . It was a GE. I called GE and they said just take it back to Home Depot and they'd exchange (manufacurer dated was stamped on it). Sure enough took it back and they exchanged it no questions asked for a new 10 year water heater, despite not having the original receipt.
Now, whether the unit should have gone up and spending the time exchanging it, is another story.

I purchased mine from Lowe's after the one from Sears died after 3 years. I replaced the elements and eventually called a plumber who said sometimes they just dont work. I thought calling a plumber would be cheaper than replacing it but wound paying a plumber and getting a new one....
I think it is a Whirlpool. After doing research, I would have paid the extra money and gotten a tankless one.

Mine 'regular' water heater is 8 years old. I'm thinking about a tankless one when I replace it.
I was reading Popular Science yesterday, and they had a blurb about another energy saving type. I completely forget what it was though. They were cheap too - like regular water heater cheap...

2 issues of which I'm aware regarding the tankless water heaters:
1. You have to carefully calculate the size
2. They have a bladder in them that is difficult to replace and tends to deterioate rapidly.
Make sure if you get one you research the details on getting your $300 Federal tax credit for it. In some cases that's more than half the cost of the water heater!Last edited by ScottieBaseball; 04-30-2009 at 12:50 PM.

I just bought a house and have to change out one of the water heaters (I have 2, it used to be a duplex). Alabama Power gave me a free one to switch from gas to electric. All I have to do is get it installed. Anyone know how much that should cost?

I ended up going through BGE Home ( my father-in-law is a retired BGE guy, so it was QUITE a discount). I got a Rheem unit, with a 12 year warranty. He also explained that the reason my old unit went up was because the water pressure was too high, due to a faulty regulator on my main line. (Funny, I had a plumber in my house a year ago to check the water pressure, and all he did was charge me $200 to fix nothing!) I was VERY pleased with the proffessionalism and performance of my BGE guy, as he replaced the heater and the faulty regulator in less than 2 hours. All is good in the Dipper house again...
...now, its time to focus on that new lawnmower!

I heard that BGE's home service is great but extremely pricey- good thing you got the discount.
As far as a lawnmower- go for a Honda from Lowe's. I bought one 1/2 price 2 years ago because someone else returned it. They sent it out for an inspection, gave it a full warranty and marked it down.

Well my water heater went up last night -- it started leaking. So I drained it and have Home Depot coming out today for an estimate. Anyone have any idea how much HD charges for the install?

That is where I'm leaning.
