A couple things...
The club will look to trade Mark Clayton on draft day. Lots of people are upset with his decision to not show up for OTA's.
He's back in Oklahoma, going to school.
Edgar Jones is being converted to fullback.
Troy Smith's days are definitely numbered, the guy wants out very badly. To the point where he's becoming a pain in the ass.

Well then I'm upset with "lots of people"; that's completely ridiculous. Though I doubt that's the main reason he would be traded anyway.
Thanks for the info.Edgar Jones is being converted to fullback.

If Joe Flacco is at OTA's then I think Clayton should be there. I think a guy that is no better then a #4 WR on his team at the moment should want to better himself and be great. There is live after the NFL, but that life is going to suck compared to making the big bucks in the NFL IMO. If Clayton were to be traded could we get a 3rd or 4th round draft pick in return?

Agree with the others. As long as Clayton told someone ahead of time he planned to go back to school during the offseason, I don't see why it's such a big deal. That said, if they can get anything for him during the draft, I'm fine with that.
Becoming? I thought Troy had passed the point of becoming a pain in the ass some time ago.

Thanks for the insight, Hank!
Getting a pick or two in return for Mark Clayton would be fantastic. Boldin, Mason, Stallworth is a solid WR corps. Obviously we need depth beyond those three, but at least we don't need to burn our #1 on a WR.
Edgar is a pretty versatile guy.
I wonder if the Skins would take a flyer on Troy Smith for a late pick?

I can't see us getting anything more than a 4th round pick for Clayton. A 5th is probably more realistic. I guess if they realy want to be done with CLayton they would accept it but I think it would be smart to hold onto him for the time being. Granted,if we happened to add someone in FA or the draft it makes him very expendable but as things stand right now we have 36 yr old Mason, an oft injuried Boldin, and Stallworth, coming back from a year off, in front of him.

Thanks for the info Hank.
The news about Mark Clayton encourages me that they are going to add a young developmental receiver through the draft. And in my mind, there's one guy who stands out as just that; Demaryius Thomas. I think he's a steal at pick 25, if he's even still available at that point.
Being saddled with Kyle Boller's woeful inaccuracy stunted Clayton's development imo. He later showed flashes with Steve McNair and Joe Flacco throwing him the ball, but certainly not enough to become indispensable. Last year was not his best, to be sure.
Hopefully he latches on somewhere and has success. I can't imagine that Clayton isn't better than a lot of team's 3rd/4th receivers. He actually might be a good fit in, ironically, a place like Miami.

Doesn't he realize that if ANY team in the NFL saw him as a starter, they would have traded for him already? He begged CLE to deal for him, and they decided to get Seneca and Delhomme over him. He just loves to exaggerate his own skill set. I couldn't stand him at OSU, and I can't stand him now.
P.S. Why would anyone give up a pick for Clayton? He's not really any good, is he?

Huh? He played not even an entire season with Boller as the starter, which was his rookie season, and since 2006 has regressed woefully from being a possible #2 receiver, to a #3 at best. Clayton is what he is, a possesion/slot type guy who has some speed but doesn't have the height or the skill sets to be a great receiver on a consistent basis, and no QB short of Peyton Manning is going to change that. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but no matter the QB he showed no consistency. He should be fortunate the Ravens even tendered him a contract.

Dear Troy Smith,
Teams would rather have their 5th round pick than you.
PS. The Browns would rather have Mr. INT - the 35 year old Jake Delhomme.

And Mark Clayton might end up playing 4th WR and special teams for the Lions if he isn't careful. No one is trading for him. He only got that high (2nd) tender because Ozzie didn't have anyone else.
Can you imagine, making millions to play for a class organization like the Ravens, and being unhappy?

It's not fair for me to lay all of the blame at Boller's feet (though I do think even practice with a player like that makes it really hard on a receiver to be gain any level of consistency, especially as a rookie).Huh? He played not even an entire season with Boller as the starter...
I'll instead just say that instability and inconsistency at the quarterback position makes it hard for a receiver to reach his fullest potential, and I think that affected Mark's overall growth.
Still, he's young enough and talented enough to land somewhere else, and if he finds the right fit, maybe he can have a season like he did in 2006 with Steve McNair in that ideal situation. That seems to be about his ceiling as a player. I won't miss any of the aforementioned players however. Life is good in Baltimore right now!Last edited by MRLeavey; 03-29-2010 at 12:19 PM.
