Great moments in sports gambling history
On a cold November day in Pittsburgh, the home town Steelers lead the visiting San Diego Chargers 11-10 with just 10 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter. Deep in their own territory, the Chargers had just one more chance at a desperation play. Too far away for a hail mary, the Chargers chose to set up a multi-lateral play that Paul 'Wrecking' Crewe once referred to as "Schoolyard BS".
On the fourth lateral of the play, Steelers' safety Troy Palamalu swatted the ball away, scooped it up, and ran the opposite way for a needless touchdown as time expired. 17-10 Steelers. But wait! A flag had been thrown. The celebrating crowd momentarily hushed to hear the referee announce that it was the Chargers who had been flagged. One of the laterals had illegally gone forward instead of backwards. The penalty was declined and the referee declared that the play was indeed a touchdown! Still 17-10 Steelers. Oops! A moment later, the referee corrected himself and announced that the play was dead at the time of the illegal forward pass. The Chargers, thanks to the penalty, held onto an 11-10 loss, thus beating the 4.5 point spread... in... another great moment in sports gambling history!

And some people don't like that accountability. And, uh, we'll sort that out." -Buck Showalter Last edited by TakebackOPACY; 11-16-2008 at 07:57 PM.. |
