I see that DeRosa has been over 500 ab's the past 2 years for the first time in his career....In 2006, his OPS dropped 122 points(in a great hitters park) and last year it dropped over 50 points over the second halves of the season.

As he gets older, this is liable to get worse...Getting him back to playing 3-5 times a week may be better for him(just like it would be better for the Orioles and Mora).
Lou doesn't really like using him in left, and he sshouldn't play short unless it's an emergency. I was being generous with first base too. Daryle Ward is the primary backup first baseman, so he'll usually be the one to spell Lee. I agree it's possible for Derosa to drop off, especially given his numbers prior to 2006, but I don't think so. I liked what I saw out of him last seasons, and he seems to be a guy that produces when he gets consistent playing time, something he never really got prior to 2006.

Oh, and Figgins would be just as good of a utility guy as Derosa, probably better.

Bottom line is BRob was worth 2-3 more wins than DeRosa was last year..In your division, that is huge.

With DeRosa as your primary bench guy getting several hundred ab's, that helps your wins vs the rest of the bench guys.

Pie is supposedly your next star....He is very good defensively now...He plays a premium position and is making no money.

I would much rather have him starting everyday with Roberts at second than Figgins and DeRosa(Deorsa playing everyday as opposed to a super UTi guy).

That scenario makes you a better team this year and guess what, it is time for you guys to actually win something.

Except that won't be his purpose in Chicago, so it is meaningless.

My money goes on Roberts staying in Baltimore this year for 3 reasons:

(1) I think they want some stability in the infield for the young pitchers.

(2) We basically have no one to adequately replace him.

(3) No other team has laid an offer on the table worth taking.

Edit: After posting this, I realized it was my 4000th post. 4 years on the Hangout and 4000 posts. Hooray! And just think, I joined at the same time as SportsGuy....and his 54,000+ posts.....

Huh? His ability to move all over the diamond has just as much worth as Derosa's. If someone needs a day off or gets injured, he won't be able to move to that position, when that's what he's done his whole career? Yeah, that definitely makes no sense.

He would go to Chicago to be the EVERYDAY CFer...Not to be a UTI guy.

Haha, you only assume that because it hurts your argument to say otherwise. That's only tru if Pie is traded and they had no other decent options in center. If that's the case, then Pie was traded for something useful, which just means it was even more beneficial to upgrade center rather than second.

I doubt CHC would trade for him just to be a UTI guy. They'd have to give up too much for him not to have a position set aside for him. You'd probably have to give up Pie just to get Figgins.

Last I read, Anaheim was not interested in Pie, so I doub that happened. If they were, then that would mean Gallagher wasn't in a deal, which would be even better for the Cubs.

Anyways, I never said they'd make hima utility guy. But say Soriano goes down to an injury. You think they'd really to hesitate to move Figgins to left and Pie in center until Soriano got back, just because "they didn't get Figgins to be utility guy? That doesn't make sense.

As much as I like Roberts, I don't see him being here on Opening Day. I think it is absolutely necessary to trade him and continue to rebuild this team. My understanding is the talks are way more serious then the media is picking up on. My prediction- The Cubs will get him soon.

Methodology heading in the right direction
Its not worth wasting words with most of the Cubs fans on this board. Most of them seem to be delusional, though not all of them. I remember I saw on another board that just about all the Cubs fans felt that Pie was better than Melky Cabrera at this point in both careers and they wouldn't make a trade straight up and in addition they thought that Pie and Gallagher right now is a better combination than Melky and Hughes.

I can buy 1 & 3 but not having an adequate replacement didn't stop them from sending Tejada away.

I shouldn't have stepped in because I really didn't follow the whole argument. I was just pointing out that Figgins would not be a UTI guy if CHC acquired him. He'd cost too much for that. Moving him to left because AS is injured does not make him a UTI guy if he was starting in CF before AS's hypothetical injury.
