  5. The Orioles haven’t faced the Blue Jays yet this year, but boy is that about to change: starting on Friday we play them 10 times in 21 days. As Moose was pointing out in the MLB Forum, Vlad Jr. currently has an OPS+ of 211. It might be 300 when July 8 comes around!

  7. This news made my day! Stay on the path to a wonderful recovery! Let me share this purely for the reason of inspiration. In 2015, I had a serious, fast-spreading case that is rarely seen in my demographic profile. My doctors in NY were startled and said it was necessary to operate as soon as possible; I was under the knife in three days. Despite my decision not to undergo radiation or chemotherapy, six years later there has still been no reemergence of the cancer--knock on wood (Hillerich & Bradsby preferred!). Bless my doctors, Bless the girlfriend who helped me through the recovery,

  9. Need to get rid of the unbalanced schedule, I'm not a fan of it. I don't need 80 games a year against the Evil Empire, Pink Hat Nation, Blue Jays and Rays. Let me see more of teams like the Angels.

  10. So you're saying if Elias had done more research on Kjerstad he would have known about the heart condition before the draft? Was there readily available evidence Kjerstad had a heart problem? Did other teams come out and say they were going to pass on him because of a heart condition? Do you think the team doctors who did a physical on him before signing his contract didn't do an in-depth job for some reason? You wouldn't have made this thread if we'd drafted Austin Martin and he came down with a heart condition. You're mad that Elias didn't pick a guy that publications (who by the w

  17. The plusses I see: -- Infrastructure improvements in the minors -- Better use of analytics -- Investment in international talent -- Good performances in the minors from the last several Duquette drafts and the first Elias draft -- Clear, undeniable improvement of the talent level in the minors The concerns: -- Is our player development that good? Seeing guys with respectable (but not great) minor league credentials come up and struggle this year, one after the other, is concerning. I had a certain amount of hope, maybe even faith, that t

  18. Entering this season, the Os added a few vets (and kept some others) that you hoped you could trade for something of potential value. They added Galvis, Franco and Harvey in FA. They tendered Severino. They handed a job to Valdez. They added Plutko. They gave a split contract to Valaika. All of these players served a purpose and for most of them, that purpose was to be an asset to use in a trade. However, that has really back fired. This group has sucked. Galvis has easily been the best player and worthy of being signed. Somehow Valdez and Harvey still have a positi

  21. I'm a strange one to start this topic since I haven't been a big Cumberland guy since he was acquired in the Gausman trade. Now don't get me wrong, do I think Cumberland is a future every day catch in the big leagues, no I still don't, but I do think it's time to give him his shot in the big leagues. Maybe it's the new bad ass "Dick Tidrow" esque mustache he's sporting, and maybe it's because the Orioles catching this year has been downright awful, but maybe it's also because the more I watch him at Norfolk this year, the more I think he deserves a shot. 22. The most recent renovations actually lowered the right field wall. You used to have to be 5'9"+ to see over the wall, which was the home run boundary. Now the home run boundary is at the feet of where fans stand in the flag court.

  24. 1. Quality of the players offered in return. 2. How close are they to major league ready? 3. Do we have other players in the system who can do that player’s job without losing too much? 4. If not, how hard would it be to acquire a suitable replacement in free agency? We see Tampa trade players who are pretty key all the time, and yet they remain contenders We can’t refuse to consider trades just because the player could be useful to us as contenders

  25. Here's a good article on what Bowie is focusing on: “Our hitting department has done a really good job of taking the focus from swinging at pitches we can hit to only swinging at pitches that we can drive,” manager Buck Britton explained this week at Prince George’s Stadium. “Even if that leads to (with) two strikes striking out looking, we’re all about swing decisions. Making sure we’re swinging at pitches that are over the middle of the plate. Because we know as we go up, the umpiring gets better, and if you continue to swing at pitches and get your A swing off on pitches that you can

  27. Put it this way: Sisco was the 61st pick in the draft. Of the 56 players picked in that spot, only six have had more at bats in the majors than Sisco. One of those was Josh Bell, who for some reason slipped to 61st but received a $5 mm bonus to sign. So, I’d call Sisco a disappointment but not a bust.

  29. Agreed. We didn’t time these trades well and there’s only so much you’re going to get. Here’s what the guys we traded were worth during the remaining period of team control after they were traded: Gausman 1.7 rWAR (but 1.5 of that was after he was waived by the Braves, including 1.3 rWAR after the Reds released him. For that he was paid $20.2 mm. Schoop 1.6 rWAR (all of which was after he was released by the Brewers), for which he was paid $10.3 mm. Machado 2.5 rWAR, for which he was paid $5.4 mm. Britton 0.3 rWAR, for which he was paid $4 mm. O’Day 0.2 rWAR, for

  31. I pretty much concur with the analysis. Honestly, from what I can tell - I think they've done a good job with the draft. But none of the very young players have made a mark yet past AA. And there haven't been acquisitions to really bolster the future. No diamonds in the rough. And we know the problems building up international talent. They need to do better, Maybe it'll happen all at once, but things rarely work out that way. We're basically depending on both Hall and Grayson Rodriquez to be stars early in their careers, and it usually takes a few years in the majors for even the most

  32. I'm giving it a B. A top farm system, the #2 overall prospect and the #1 pitching prospect. I am writing off Kjerstad. However, that still leaves us with Hall and Henderson. As mentioned there are some other players in the system that are doing really well this season so far who could also be contributors. As slow as Mountcastle started, he's been coming around lately and he looks like he could be a contributor. I don't believe guys like Akin, Kremer, and Lowther are going to be contributors. These are all guys with average, middling stuff. I'm not sure why anyone else can't s

  33. I'm in the distinct minority on this board about calling up Rutschman and others right now because I believe there is value in minor league development that others don't agree with but Leyba has 600+ AB's in the minors. I'd like to see him called up and given everyday at bats for a month to see what he can do.

  34. Very tough to grade it. I’ll say this: I expected the team to suck for three years, so I am not that disappointed with the team’s record. I also knew that our virtually nonexistent international presence was going to mean it would take longer to build the farm system to an elite level than it would for a team that was at least credible in that area. I can’t say that the team is behind schedule, especially when you consider that the pandemic delayed the development of our farmhands. At the same time, I’m not really confident that the team will begin to turn it around next year. I ha

  36. You did see where I said I hated the pick? Him being the BPA has zero to do with his health issues, they are completely separate things. I don't dislike the pick because he got sick. I dislike the pick since I didn't think the guys we got overslot made up for what we lost going underslot.

  39. I remember one time reading an article that when the Astros were rebuilding, they were king of the "back fields", and were aware of all kinds of young prospects that were way under the radar. Based on the last 3 years of trades, seems like Elias has carried that over (with Perez's help) in asking for this young International signees that are well off the beaten path of coverage.

  40. If the player is ready you play him. The Astros did it with Altuve. The Braves did it with Freeman. There is no sense in alienating a player and a fan base by holding a player back to possibly keep them for their 30 year old season by sacrificing their 24 year old season. Keep building and move them up when ready.

  41. I think there's a little helium in Grenier's numbers right now. His batting average on balls in play this season is .432, compared to .355 last year, which lines up with his increase in batting average from .244 to .315. He has had some improvement in isolated power (.140 last season to .162 this season) and in K/AB (35.8 percent last season, 31.5% this season) but his K/BB has slipped a bit (from 2.34 last season to 2.69 this season). I haven't seen him play, but the numbers suggest that he's made some improvement at the plate, but not as much as the headline stats indicate.
