You could argue Singleton/Anderson either way, if you are speaking of their Orioles career only.    Anderson was worth 35 WAR as an Oriole, Singleton 30. But Anderson was here 14 seasons to Singleton’s 10.    Both were 3-time all stars here; Singleton had 3 top 10 MVP finishes (including a 2nd and 3rd) to Anderson’s 1 (9th).  I’ll give Singleton the nod, but it’s not a no-brainer IMO.

Everybody below the dotted line threw in their vote more than a year and a half after the thread was started.    Those votes shouldn’t count.   It didn’t take a genius at that point to see that the contract was headed towards disaster.

I have no problem of going on record and saying I'd like Chris Davis resigned. But at something more like $56m/4 years and not the disaster of a contract he received.

 Of course that is my opinion.  Winning matters.  It seems that's why they keep score.

I was shocked when a few years ago I saw he only got 2.3 percent of the hall of fame vote the one year he was eligible.  And he was a better player than Roberto Alomar who got 90 percent of the vote.

However, players like Ripken, Robinson, Palmer and, yes, Brady Anderson...these are all Baltimore household names. We've seen over the years that the club (generally speaking) takes care of its icons. So it's very possible that Elias *may* want to get his own guys (and let Anderson go), but ownership let Elias know how valued Anderson is as a former star for the O's who has put pretty much his entire life into the Orioles as a player and as an executive type. So, it's possible they told Elias to give Brady x number of months, to work out a possible role, but if at the end of that time period it's not working out and/or the role/responsibilities isn't in line with what Elias and Brady want...then to have a proper sendoff instead of letting him go prior to the holidays.

So, yeah. I like Anderson a lot. I also want Elias to hire and run the organization as he deems fit. If we're looking at how things are going now: Duquette gone, Showalter gone, Rajsich gone, Graham gone, Elias hired, Mejdal hired on and new job postings around expanding the analytics department...we're seeing true movement that we really haven't seen before. Yes, Anderson is left, but if we're going to bugaboo the organization/Elias because Anderson is still around...then you're not paying attention and/or you have some form of Angelos PTSD.

I have all the faith in the world of Elias and the Angelos sons are starting to gain my respect, too. And if, say, come April Anderson is still around...maybe people should just accept the fact that Anderson is perhaps a valuable asset regardless of the regime in office.

Well put. I’d also like to add that having household oriole names could sell some seats at the park in a known upcoming losing season which we need to sell whatever we can sell. 

 

Brady doesn’t come off as incompetent as well. He was the most progressive out of all the former guys which is why he may still be here. Those other guys that supposedly “were the problem”, didn’t do their job like people that were willing to adapt. They were very old school, wether they were forced into that I have no say but a breath of fresh air was needed to revitalize this team, maybe they feel like Brady can breathe that fresh air too, whereas Duquette (etc) were stuck in their ways way too deep. Just my thoughts on that

This is my point. And wasn’t Ken like bitter towards the orioles or something? It’s kens opinion in his stories as much as he says it’s from “sources”. 

I can see where you could draw the line, I’m not ignorant, but we should stick to the facts and draw from there instead.

      Means Is only behind Glasnow in WAR, ahead of Cole and Bieber. Good company. I hope the breakout continues.

      Currently, the pitching staff is 14th in WAR (in the majors), 10th best in walk rate, 17th in total ERA and 7th in BP ERA. Nice numbers considering we apparently have the worst catchers in baseball.  I’m shocked that they could be this awful defensively, game calling, framing, etc...and yet we are finding some early success after building on last year, which wasn’t as bad as suspected. It’s almost as if the catchers defense can be overcome by other factors! (Or people are just clueless as to how to actually judge a C defense)

      The issue is that you are intentionally taking the GMs statement that the Os are not measuring success by wins as meaning something else....that the Orioles are not trying to win games. And then extrapolating that into the Orioles are trying to lose games.    That simply isn’t what is going on. And I think you know that. I think in general folks are on board with the rebuild. We are also at the point where we are about as far from being competitive as we have been in a long time.      I don’t know how much the pandemic has effected the rebuild, but minor leagues have been shut down for a loooong time.  I can’t help but think it probably cost us a full year.    I don’t know if Hyde will be the manager in 2 months or 2 years.  I really don’t worry about that at all. Right now, I just want to see the Os get better and develop talent.    I would say this is the last year the Os can continue with a mindset of we are not measuring success with wins. I think it is likely that success next year will be marked by small improvement to something along the lines of 75-80 wins.    I am trying to enjoy the moments.    The moments Mancini reminds us of what he can be. The moments Mountcastle reminds us that he could be in the mix for ROY. The moments John Means looks like a real #1 or #2. And yes the moment we get to see AR, Diaz and others crack the lineup.    It’s not the same as fretting over when Hyde rests Santander or who he pitches in the 8th or 9th. But this ain’t Toronto and whether or not we use our historically good closer in the 6th, 11th or ever. Hyde is gonna learn or he won’t. In the end, of the GM gets the talent part, getting someone to manage will be a breeze.

      Yeah, hard to see how there could be an instinct (in any useful definition of the term) for a heavily rule-regulated game like baseball. I think the "feel," "knack," etc. for a sport arises from early inculcation and many years of repetition, coaching, and emulation. Even "tools," though necessary and closer to what one might consider innate abilities, can't provide that. In fact, I think that there are just as many times that a "hunch" (the closest I can come at the moment to defining instinct) leads to bad results as good ones, e.g. trying to take an extra base or steal one at the wrong time or in the wrong game situation or all sorts of guesses, such as what type of pitch will be thrown or where a ball is going to be hit, when not based in study or prep. Sometimes a manager's role is to rein in what the player's "instinct" is, such as when a pitcher is convinced they can go longer, but actually should be taken out.
