Austin Hays 2019

Wonder if this is based on his AA performance or just because Norfolk is running out of outfielders and there aren’t any better options to promote.

I’m fine with it just expected him in Bowie a bit longer than two weeks.

I think the plan was to have him AAA to start the year, but due to his injury, Frederick and Bowie have been more of a "rehab assignment" than anything.

I didn't expect him to spend any time at Bowie this year, but I'm glad to see him move on to Norfolk. I hope he can find the stroke from 2017 and put together a couple of good months there.

He is out of options out of this year , correct?  Then he should be brought up as soon as he is ready.  No service time issues to deal with as he already has time in the majors.

According to rosterresource.com he has 2 options remaining.

https://www.rosterresource.com/mlb-baltimore-orioles

That website is confusing because it does not include the current season on its "options remaining" list. He was optioned in 2018 and 2019. He was not optioned in 2017, he was added to the 40-man roster in September and remained on the team for the remainder of that season. Thus he has one option year remaining and can be optioned in 2020 if necessary.

There are always extremes on each side of these debates. I don't think there is any reason to bring him to Baltimore until he proves he can hit AAA pitching consistently. I always didn't see any reason to put him in AA (unless it was for rehab) after playing parts of two seasons there and showing he could more than hold his own there, especially when healthy. I hope he puts together three good months and is ready to play in Baltimore in 2020.

A second half outfield of Hays in CF, DJ Stewart in LF, and Santander in RF could be fun to watch.

I’ve noticed he’s been playing in CF a lot.  7 of 9 games at Frederick, 2 of 6 at Bowie, 1 of 1 at Norfolk.   So, 10 of 16 overall.

I’m all for it. Let’s see if he can be an average defensive CF. If so, that would have a ton of value for us, especially since it’s looking unlikely that Mullins will be a big league regular. Would help unclog the COF positions, too.

I'm all for that. I'd like to see Mancini as the everyday 1B (if not traded) as well. With struggles of Diaz and McKenna as well as Mullins issues to start the year, I think it opens the door for guys like Stewart and Santander for more than just this year and the start of next if they can show something. I like the idea of having Diaz, McKenna, Mullins, Stewart, Santander, and Hays all vying for spots in 2020 and 2021. I think it's good to see some guys now so all can be evaluated at the MLB level in the next couple of years and we can really see who can stick.

I think traded. That way they can get back to Davis playing everyday. He just needs regular at bats.

    • I am working, but I sneak a look, and things are not getting any better. I think I’m gonna focus on work for a little while.
    • Would be nice to see him finish on a high note.  He has great stuff.  I think we will see a good bit of him next year.
    • Aand already 1-0 Toronto. I think the folks who had Lopez pegged for next year’s Five may want to hold their horses a bit.
    • I hope Hays can learn to stop diving a balls 2-3' away from him that he has no chance of catching.  Its great he plays all out, but hes a liability to his own future.
    • I appreciate you filling in the lineups, the only reason I posted the game thread was because nobody else had, And after a few minutes on my iPhone the site freezes and I have to reload and I lose everything I’ve typed, so I have to be quick. If you’re old enough to remember the bird, and you are very old indeed, I remember him too. One of those one-year wonders like Joe Charboneau.
