Trying to Salvage a Split (vs. BLUE JAYS, 8/04)

Recommended Posts

I'm pretty sure Peterson would have walked if he hadn't swung at all. I was hoping to see that happen to load the bases and set up the question: Can I guy who can't find the plate walk Alberto? Probably not.

Yac has nothing today. Wild as hell until he throws a fat strike.

Has he ever had anything?  Out of all the pitchers the past two-ish years, he's been one of the least impressive out of a very unimpressive group.

    • If I were a team and he was willing to sign a long term deal I'd be worried he'd stop using the illegal substances he's using to increase his spin rate.
    • He's probably got the Cy Young in the clubhouse if his teammates can clinch before Sunday, but could he lose it if his number is called on 3 days rest again Sunday, and he scuffles with a playoff berth on the line? Except that Boddy's a team employee now, would have said he and Boddy have to be over the moon on the eve of his FA? Like Rendon/Strasburg last year, there's a good bit extra he can earn with a hot month, maybe enough for him to flirt with the 1-year record if he stars and sticks by that principle.
    • scOtt, you say you don't see enough actual playing in videos, so this one is for you.
    • Not ours. He's only as high as he is (19) because Luke liked him a lot more than me and this was the compromise.

    • Alberto will make the most of those arbitration eligible guys at maybe $3 million next year. Those other guys made $10+ million. Nunez and Valaika could be non-tendered, but not because of their exorbitant salaries. I don't think Armstrong will get non-tendered because he might make $800K rather than $600K. Santander, Severino and Alberto aren't getting non-tendered this year and none of them have enough surplus value to merit trading. Maybe Santander if he has a great 2021 is a trade chip, but he needs to show it for a full season to be a valuable trade chip. Trading Alberto or Severino would just be shuffling deck chairs and my guess is it would look bad if they traded EVERYONE that made over the minimum. Cobb could be traded but they probably get a better return at the trade deadline, and my guess is that they would end up having to pick up the same amount of salary if they traded him in July as they would if they traded him in the offseason.
