Waiting for the Axe to fall

Recommended Posts

It’s kind of an odd scene: waiting to see which guys get dumped, and who among us was correct.

Like reading “The Lottery” again.

Might be a while. Only the Braves have announced so far.

Elias had said he wouldn’t take it right to the deadline, but it’s no surprise if he does, given the possibility of last minute transactions that alter the plan.

In response to the OP, I don’t necessarily see removing a guy from the 40 man, or not adding him, as meaning that player has been “dumped.”    This is partly a game of knowing who’s likely to be claimed and who isn’t, for a variety of reasons that relate to more than just talent.    I can pretty much guarantee that some player we don’t protect will end up playing a significant amount for the Orioles this year.

We aren't the ones getting cut and we have plenty of guys who if we cut them won't make any difference.  It really doesn't matter much to me who gets cut.  I think they should err on the side of protecting prospects but anyway I don't see anything to be on edge over.

It doesn’t really matter to me either, I’m not completely emotionally invested in any of the guys who might be at risk, the lottery comment is an expression of empathy for the players themselves, and because that short story actually did come to mind.

However, everybody who follows the team has a sense of expectations, and waiting to see what happens is waiting to see if those expectations were correct or not, and there is a certain sense of satisfaction in being correct.

I don’t know who you think is going to be sent packing, and I accept that you don’t care, but I would be surprised if you didn’t have an opinion at all.

In the Lottery you die. In this you either end up with another team or back with the Orioles on a minor league deal.

It’s fiction. Nobody dies

Well nobody got dumped at all, and we still have one spot remaining on the 40-man, so Hess, et al can rejoice...for now. April long time away...

There will be 40-man casualties yet to be sure.

So today is just the deadline to add players to be protected from the rule 5 right?  We could theoretically have our 40 man roster at 37 come draft time and pick up to 3 guys if we wanted?

    • Good one, thx. He's the one--and of course, also in 1989. Why Not? Not quite a one-hit wonder, but an interesting career. Three years with the White Sox, then out of MLB for five years before the O's picked him up for a flash of decency. In between, was he lobbing softballs then?
    • Oops, good catch. And you're right, it does change the calculus. I forced myself finally to watch *that* game again, especially curious to hear the announcers' reaction to events as they unfolded (or not). Around the sixth or seventh inning Cal Ripken was citing the "conventional" wisdom of saving the closer if you're the road team but using the closer in a late tie game at home. In the ninth with the Jays threatening, Cal wondered if Buck might bring in Britton to solve a tight jam, but O'Day relieved Brach and got out of it. After that neither announcer made a peep about Britton sitting, until the final comment of the postgame, when someone observed, as an afterthought, that Britton was unused. No, wait, the other announcer did mention briefly late in the game that Kimbrell was unused in a key NL playoff game in 2013, but I looked it up and found no comparable situation in the Atlanta losses. I do like to play devil's advocate, and so in theory go with Cal's "conventional" practice as acceptable, despite the bad result in this case. Especially, as another poster pointed out, with Liriano so dominant. But that's on paper. Watching Ubaldo absolutely groove those last 3 meatballs in a row (on 3 consecutive pitches?) was just sickening, and brought back that intuitive sinking feeling that all Oriole fans (except Buck, apparently) knew about Ubaldo from his whole erratic history here--notwithstanding a chimerical September of effectiveness. Just a tease... like Daniel Cabrera, and so many others before him. One final observation, IMO the Orioles lost that game mostly because they failed to take advantage of the Jays' weak bullpen (Cecil, Biagini, Grilli, and Osuna) who gave up like 1 hit in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Okay, ready to move on...
    • I used to root for the Astros...But they are evil. I also rooted for the Mariners, but they’re pathetic. At the moment I am following baseball in general but I am only emotionally attached to the Orioles. However, as Manfred continues to ruin the game, I am on the verge of losing interest in baseball completely.
    • Hopefully restoring some of the civil liberties that were taken away for all of this.
    • Yea, it wasn't a good time for me, and yes, I'm probably exaggerating a bit.  I certainly wasn't jumping on a scale.
    • Gaining 7 pounds a week seems pretty extreme.  I have been losing weight as I have just been eating healthy food. I had to put another notch in my belt.
    • It was the Ravens that nixed the deal    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001108156/article/rams-dl-michael-brockers-details-nixed-ravens-deal
