If there's anything a rebuilding team needs it's an over 30 lefty reliever. Have we already forgotten the Jamie Walker era?

Look what he's done for the Marlins.

They hadn't won in a week before they acquired him now they can't lose.

He is 9-3, not too shabby.

Nobody suggested sitting on the bench with the O's.

If Diaz were promoted he would be competing with Hays, Santander, and likely Mountcastle (plus Smith Jr and potentially Mason Williams or DJ Stewart). Barring injury I don't know how he plays every day. If one of the above does sit or slide to DH I don't know how that helps the team.

Diaz in RF, Hays CF, Santander LF, Núñez DH, Mountcastle 1B

I'd prefer Mountcastle prove he can't play LF before he goes to 1B. Diaz I hope has an opportunity to play his way on the team next year, realistically it's probably not happening this year. I'm fine getting more data on whether Santander, Hays, and Nunez can hit enough to be regulars.

That could be the lineup against lefties, with Mullins or Velazquez spelling Hays against tough lefties.

If you feel the need to have Chris Davis and/or Stewart in the lineup, one of Nunez, Santander, Mountcastle or Diaz could rotate sitting against righties and Mountcastle could get time in left when Diaz or Santander sits.

Diaz could play center in a pinch but you would probably prefer Mullins or Velazquez when Hays needs a day off.

Realistically, I don't expect to see Diaz this year, which if nothing else at least should get Mountcastle more time in the outfield when he is called up.

It will definitely hurt their playoff chances this year.

I hope that when they get absolutely shit all for Bleier we revisit this to note that we made an already shit team worse for no real reason

That should be a non-issue.  There should be plenty of at bats for everyone that matters.  Smith obviously doesn't matter, and there's no reason for them to favor Williams or Stewart with at bats over Diaz - zippy - none.

I'd prefer to play Mountcastle at 1B.  Playing Davis at all is crazy - he's been the single worst player in MLB the last 2 or 3 years - setting all kinds of records for putridity.  That's a thing - because of Chris Davis.

No reason for this team to pay a 33 year-old reliever more than the minimum.

Best case scenario the O's will be competitive in 2022 at which point Bleier will be 35 and in his third and final year of arbitration and thus unlikely to have any surplus value.

Then they shouldn’t have traded Bleier

You'll take that back when John Doe is the 2024 Rookie of the Year.

Mountcastle should have the opportunity to play outfield. I don't care about Davis but I don't see the rush on Diaz when he can still get intrasquad reps without costing service time or holding back anyone else's development.

Given that this post is about the roster I want to chime in with my worry that Hess wasn’t bad enough today to be the head on the platter when Means returns( God grant him peace)

Getting defensive reps at any position is what you can do in intrasquad games at any level.  Offensive reps - I don't buy it.

They always do. Maybe they'll get cash.

    • I still think this would be a great idea . The Colts have the #21 selection and Costanzo is retiring. I’d see if the want Brown for the #21 and #117. On the positive side Brown is a proven LT and many mock drafts have them drafting a collection OT.
    • For sure, thanks.  I guess my surprise was more at the fact that the Marlins gave Chen such a huge contract.  Talk about JAGs.  Also amazed that out of all the stars in the MLB (Kershaw, Betts, Harper, etc.) that there wasn't one player last year who got paid more than $22 million.
    • If you released a guy than his salary wasn't prorated.
    • Off topic, but just out of curiosity I googled Wei-Yin Chen's name, and discovered he was the highest-paid player of the 2020 MLB season at $22 million.  I don't know how that is possible, but then again not much made sense in 2020. As far as Santander, he seems like a JAG.  Maybe slightly above a JAG.  Certainly not a guy to build around, but a capable 5-7 hitter in a lineup of a somewhat contending team.  In other words, he isn't that special. I hope Yusniel Diaz gets a chance this year.  He was supposedly the cornerstone of the Machado trade, and I have yet to see him in any box score.  He isn't getting any younger, let the dude play.
    • Its a good get.  The back half isn't like LeMahieu with the please play him six more years thing, and leapfrogging them in 2/3/4/<never> years will be tougher. Vlad might need to try 3B again if they want to start Tellez and all three of last year's outfielders. He's 5 years almost to the day older than Correa, not that we have $150M lying around, but some chance in 2022 whoever Correa's team is may have a shot at the younger/cheaper/better thing.     Using B-Ref tonight Springer as wild guess for overall Correa comp has 28 WAR in 3600 PA to Correa's 26 WAR in 2600 PA, though Springer better and healthier lately. Maybe now Realmuto in his Bryce/Dombrowski group text is like - ha, your $100M offer, so puny.   He lacks Mets stalking horse though. Good job Jays buying more good players when you've grown enough good players.   I'm good with anybody beating the Yankees, or at least stressing Gerrit Cole's summer, one more year.
    • I watched him pitch..I’m just not completely overvaluing 14 innings.
