No he is not "fine." This is a perfect example of when the "stats" distort reality. He has had numerous bad drops. He got away with one on Saturday that should have been his second error of the game.

I get it, that drop the other night was bad and it is hard to forget the ball hitting him in the head. That is why we have defensive stats. Because your mind plays tricks on you. He is fine.

The first thing is not and has never been backed up by defensive stats. What is also not backed up by stats is that but that a lot of people swore was true, is that Severino is a good defensive catcher. I got into several arguments about that last year, and this year the eye test seemed to catch up with the advanced stats and I haven't heard nearly as much debate to that point.

The second was factually accurate, but clearly not a guarantee of future success. I don't know what type of point you think you are making.

Stewart is terrible defensively and uncoordinated regardless of the attempt that current stats try to qualify talent. He's had five plays since Saturday that would embarrass a player at any level. But, sure, hang your hat on sss and misleading stats. He'll prove you wrong in the end.

I love defense stats and I’m a big believer. But they take a long time to normalize, and the eye test is also meaningful. Stewart is faster than he looks, but he does look clumsy, he doesn’t seem to follow the ball well, he appears to get late jumps, plays the ball poorly off the wall, and doesn’t seem to have a strong or accurate arm. His actual errors have been pretty egregious, but in addition to those, he doesn’t seem comfortable in right. It’s early days yet, and of course he needs time to work out the kinks, and the stats will normalize and be more accurate.

I don’t know which traits can be fixed with time and practice, and which traits are what they are( he’s certainly not going to get any faster, for instance) So I don’t know how much he can improve and in which areas, but for now, we have to hope he does improve.

Regarding catchers, ours are BAD. But they hit, and so no one cares... I wish someone would.
