  1. Tony, I hear you on Leach. I think some are overrating the ceiling he would've brought with him, but he would've been exciting (both on and off the field) and he would've sold tickets. I also agree that if they really want to bring out the fans than they need to promote a more fan-friendly experience. Should let lots open up earlier, not harrass tailgaters*, and do their best to make the games an experience. *I've personally never been bothered, but I've heard multiple stories. As for how serious MD is about football, I think that's still to be decided. I know many take the Edsall hi

  2. Totally agree here. His statement is just full of malarky.

  5. Amazing. I simply say that from reports we have only heard of 5 people present and you assume that that is the number? There could have been 20 or 30, 50 , 100. Do you know how many? The number is important in interpreting what has been said. There are many scenarios possible. Here's one, Simon fires into the air to stop a quarrel, it's a crowd of people thightly packed. He is drunk and doesn't notice any one is hit. Others are present and also firing weapons in celebration of New Years. He leaves and finds out later that people were shot. Or he could have accidently discharged his weapon as

  6. It's opinions like this that lead to relievers getting more dollars per win in free agency than any other postion. I'm sure people like Kevin Gregg and his agent appreciate the belief in his magic powers. I am curious as to what happened between 2006 and 2007, when he transitioned from being a random Dodgers middle reliever to the Marlins' closer. Did he always have his closer fairy dust, or did he acquire it, possibly for Christmas in '06? Can you buy this on the internet? And did he temporarily lose it (possibly in the cushions of his couch?) in 2008-09 when he blew nearly one-quarter o

  7. Most of them are M&N. They had an authorized wholesaler on EBAY and I got most of the jerseys well below $100 when they retailed for over $300. The wholesaler (lakeshow) now deals mostly in M&N jackets.

  8. I think that, especially on the road, the last 3 outs will have substantially more leverage than any other outs in the game. (for example: a 2 run home run in a 1-run game can result in huge leverage shifts.) The fact that good relievers is often cited as a reason for beating pythagorean expected wins is a really good sign to me that the correlation between runs prevented by a closer and expected wins is actually undervalued. This isn't to say that I think Gregg is a good signing. I do think that relievers are worth more than their WAR will tell you. But, I want an actual good pitcher clos

  10. You could have said "as a guy with a first-name-last-name and some goofy SportRec glasses" and it would have meant just as much to me. Hitters don't magically become better in the 9th inning and the save is a statistic with artificially inflated value. If the Marlins had never said, "hey we can stick this kid who is coming off three 4+ ERA seasons in the closer's role," he'd just be another run of the mill reliever signing 1/1 deals.

  11. Let's look at all the relievers the Orioles have signed to long term contracts in the last ten years: Steve Kline Chad Bradford Jamie Walker Danys Baez Mike Gonzalez That's 46.5 million total for 339 innings of 5.4 ERA relief. Replacement level for relievers in the AL is 4.5: that's a total of 30 runs, or 3 wins, below replacement. Giving multi year deals to average relievers is a terrible idea, I don't know why we should still have to listen to This Time It's Different at this point.

  13. So I stick up for the guy and I have bromance? That is interesting. The only thing I called BS was the thing I bolded. And I will stand by that. You said that Joe had total lack of awareness on that play. I proved that he was totally aware on the play. Oher didn't even touch him, that is terrible. In my opinion, I think Flacco thought Troy was going to at least get hit by someone once the ball was snapped. It was a 3 step drop and if someone does put a hand on Troy, he gets the pass off. The fact that he snapped the ball with 9 seconds on the clock was a bit troubling, I will agree. I

  14. You do realize that FIU played in and won a bowl game this year? Yes, it was a third tier bowl against a team from a second rate conference, but it still counts as a bowl game. What patsy teams and mid-level teams do you want to see the Terps play? Every BCS level team plays games against the bottom feeders to pad the schedule. VT even lost to one at home this year. The Terps played one game against a perennial bowl team at a neutral site that was close enough for any fan to attend (Navy at M&T Bank Stadium) and that was pretty well attended. They played against a regional rival with a

  15. Yes, they did. Is the WAC a major conference? Was the Big West? Your logic is just all over the place here. Rutgers, just two seasons ago, was a pretty solid football team. Conference strength or not, moving from a 1-AA conference to a BCS conference and winning it as quickly as Edsall did was impressive. You don't have to be impressed by it, and that's fine. But stop shrugging it off like it's no big deal. That's simply not correct. John-OH's complaint about Edsall's record against top-25 teams is at least a valid one (and probably my argument with his hire, too). Look, I wanted Leach and a

  18. Sports Guy's argument: You don't even know what you're talking about /giggle... I mean the guy plays a mean rogue in World of Warcraft, he is totally qualified to be the President of the United States. I mean hell I would vote for the guy, he said I had nice eyes once.

  19. With the 6th year being a team option, so in reality probably in the 5/80 range. Overpaying? Yep. What you need to pay to get a quality free agent? Yep. But hey we got our 3rd baseman of the future on the cheap, ha ha ha laugh at Texas. They are such idiots for spending the real money to upgrade their team. Such a flawed concept that has been proven time and time again to not work. I mean what do the Yankees and Red Sox have to show for it in the last 10 years? I wonder what exactly the Hangout community expects to pay for a premium free agent on the open market. You expect to get a "deal"?
