If Angelos would like a guaranteed way to make the playoffs that involves spending money, I'd suggest that he buy the Cubs.

Dan Duquette: "...we've increased our payroll every single year that I've been here..." quoted from the interview on the "Hot Stove Show" on 105.7 The Fan, December 3, 2015. As to opening day player payrolls, not quite. Duquette joined the O's in November of 2011 and the opening day payroll for 2012 was down 3.4% from the previous year. Anyhow, here's the opening day player payroll history during Duquette's tenure plus the history for the same period for the MLB in total (courtesy of Baseball Prospectus):

Year Payroll $M % Delta MLB $B % Delta

2015 119 10.2% 3.8 8.6%

2014 108 17.4% 3.5 9.4%

2013 92 8.2% 3.2 6.7%

2012 85 -3.4% 3.0 3.4%

2011 88 2.9

So, overall, during the Duquette regime, opening day player payroll has increased by 35.2%. This compares with an increase of 31% for all of MLB. The average increase is 8.8% for the Orioles and 7.75% for MLB. $1.19M is the number for each 1% change from the 2015 Orioles opening day player payroll. The current projected payroll is $113.87M. That means that Duquette has the following amounts left to spend under the listed scenarios:

Assumption Assumed Payroll $M $M Left To Spend

No Change 119.0 5.1

MLB Average Increase 128.2 14.3

O's Average Increase 129.5 15.6

Same Delta as 2015 131.4 17.5

DD Max to Date 139.7 25.8

20% Delta 142.8 28.9

30% Delta 154.7 40.8

From the Hall of Fame Tracker: 136 Ballots (30.2%) - 8.43 votes per public ballot 136 (100%) - Ken Griffey Jr 120 (88.2%) - Mike Piazza 112 (82.4%) - Jeff Bagwell 109 (80.1%) - Tim Raines ------------------- 85 (62.5%) - Trevor Hoffman 82 (60.3%) - Curt Schilling 76 (55.9%) - Mike Mussina 68 (50.0%) - Barry Bonds 67 (49.3%) - Roger Clemens 67 (49.3%) - Edgar Martinez 63 (46.3%) - Alan Trammell - last ballot 41 (30.1%) - Lee Smith 25 (18.4%) - Fred McGriff 20 (14.7%) - Jeff Kent 19 (14.0%) - Mark McGwire - last ballot 17 (12.5%) - Larry Walker 13 (9.6%) - Billy Wagner 11 (8.1%) - Gary Sheffield 10 (7.4%) - Sammy Sosa ------------------- 4 (2.9%) - Jim Edmonds 1 (0.7%) - Garrett Anderson 1 (0.7%) - Nomar Garciaparra I would be very happy with four elected; however, the silent vote hurts most candidates and both Bagwell and Raines are in danger. We're going to see a lot of raised numbers after weeding out the inactive reporters. It would be so interesting if Mike Piazza is elected that he says he took steroids in his induction speech. With him and Bagwell though, it's only innuendo, not even circumstantial evidence against them. Fred McGriff is getting buried by the steroid-clouded candidates; maybe he should have taken some. Larry Walker is unfairly getting docked for being the "best Rockie". Four votes for Jim Edmonds??? He deserves a lot more than that. I really hope he makes the cut - he's just as good if not better than a number of players who will.

COC you're making a lot of arguments that don't refute my overall point...I don't disagree with anything you said in this post, nothing, but again it still benefits the player more while pushing the pendulum of risk to the team. Can large market teams absorb the risk, yes, they're still absorbing more risk than what they would have if they didn't include an opt-out. If we agree on that, then the back and forth at this point is moot.

Why didn't we DF'A Xavier Avery instead of Tim Berry and Olmos? I wouldn't mind DF'A Nolan Reimold!! The most overrated Oriole in history.
