  1. Also a nice throw from deep in the hole. People were ready to bury him on Tuesday. I hope he makes them eat crow.

  2. I love distorted photos for some reason. That's one's a classic. Here's one that was at the tail end of a panorama I took at the Durham Bulls home opener on Monday. Sometimes people close by get distorted. I wish I could say this guy was wearing a Yankees cap, but it's a Braves one.

  3. On the post-game show last night, Rick Dempsey was effusive in his praise of Welington Castillo's pitch calling, saying things like "finally we have a catcher who will call something other than a fastball with two strikes and a runner on base!" He never mentioned Wieters by name, but he gave the distinct impression that he thought Wieters was a lousy pitch-caller and that Castillo is a big improvement. I was kind of surprised how blunt he was. I know there are some posters who were critical of Wieters' pitch-calling at times, but it was usually criticism of a specific sequen

  12. Apparently DD thought the 40 man was absurd. Some names that have been DFA'd recently: Urrutia, Dariel Alvarez, Lough, Pena, Bridwell, Garcia, Drake, Berry, Chris Jones, Matusz(traded), C.Walker, Adam Walker, Rifenhauser, Olmos, etc... It's like he's trying to stock the system from top down instead of bottom to top. We've been drafting better so hopefully the two will meet. Bowie's rotation is pretty prospectless right now. Eventually the depth will meet the prospects. Another absurd fact, our signed int'l players in full season baseball in the min

  15. The flight of the ball clearly changes direction around that second row of bunting. I'm not so sure that it hit the facade though...it may have taken a funny, straight down, glance off of a railing. It even looks like it may have glanced off a railing on the lower set of seats as it was coming down. When the ball hits the base of the wall it should have bounced back towards the infield with more force if it did this off the fly. Instead, the ball kind of dribbles when it lands there. It clearly struck something higher. I believe that whe

  16. I thought the same thing, but I spoke with a friend who has been to the rogers centre a few times and he said that the 2nd deck is a couple rows beyond the fence. If he is right, then that would be quite impressive to have the ball come back around and hit the wall. Here is a decent picture that might make things clearer (but its still hard to tell and this is a few years old as Nelson Cruz is still an oriole):

  17. I think we can infer that Dempsey had a good reputation, and the retroactive figuring of his overall defense is good. He ended up with a 25-win career despite the devil's own .666 OPS. But saying he's the best pitch caller in team history... ehh, that's going to be mighty subjective. How do you know it wasn't Dave Skaggs? Or Jeff Tackett? Andy Etchebarren? Hal Smith? Gregg Zaun? Bob Melvin? I wouldn't go any further than saying Dempsey was probably a good pitch caller.

  19. 90-94. He was more like 88-90 when his shoulder was bothering him. We've seen his velocity fluctuate probably more than any other O's pitcher I can recall in recent memory. When he's really feeling good we see him at 95-96. Opening day last year he was hitting 95 pretty consistently.

  21. http://www.baseballamerica.com/international/international-reviews-baltimore-orioles-2016/#H4GmkV4VacWXL1Us.97 Summary: No surprises here, but this is a scathing review. The Orioles don't spend internationally, and the Damien Magnifico trade is evidence things aren't likely to change.

  30. My two cents worth... It seems to me that Castillo relies too heavily on his glove on pitches in the dirt. I always felt that MW was very good at dropping to his knees and using his body to the keep the pitch in front of him. On the bright side, Beef seems to be very good at digging those pitches out. I also noticed that Castillo can get very animated at times. He's almost like a cheerleader behind the plate. I like that.

  31. All have had 12 or more Plate Appearances without a hit. Devon Travis is at 24 PA's to lead the pack of bums that should be relegated to DFA status (if you listen to the nay-sayers).

  32. I am surprised to see how well Castillo can avoid a passed ball. Just from conventional stats it looks like Wieters was a magician at blocking balls and Castillo had some high PB numbers. After watching him keep Brittons erratic sinker in front of him last night I'm not leaning much on past performance anymore...he has looked great and seems to be a good hitter too.

  33. Until the roster needs to get more in-line with the upcoming schedule (May) and the OPT OUTS of the Minor League Contracts, there is no hurry to rid the roster of Gentry IMO. His ST was great BUT that was because he was actually playing a LOT MORE than he has into the regular season. Take a picture of the roster today and see how much it changes by May 01. Some players will be jettisoned if unproductive and with out options, players will get injured, injured players will return and the MiLB contracts will become extinct through opt outs. This roster, Norfolk's roster and Bowie's roster wil

  34. Castillo was our MVP last night. Made several nice stops on Zach's repeated sinkers in the dirt with men on base in a one run ballgame. Great footwork and flexibility. The game he called in Bundy's first start was absolutely brilliant. Hard to quantify, but I feel like he is more creative than Wieters in his targets and communication. I really like what I see so far.

  36. Defensive specialist? He didn't take charge on a shallow fly ball, yielding to Schoop to attemp an extremely difficult play, and then followed that up with a throwing error. Is he really a plus defensive player?
