  1. Eddie Murray just poured my beer. It's the first time I ever had a chance to speak to him. I told him he was a childhood hero of mine and I used to have his poster on my wall. I'm feeling surprisingly emotional about this moment. The combination of aging, nostalgia for youth and better days, and great memories. I took my beer outside to drink where it was less crowded and for some reason I actually find myself fighting back tearsas I sit here drinking it

  2. I went to the Orioles Caravan in Frederick Maryland in Carroll Creek Park today. If you are interested in seeing pictures, I posted them on the Orioles Hangout Page on Facebook. Just like yesterday it was a few giveaways, and autographs only. The signers were Sig Mejdal, Austin Hayes, Grayson Rodriguez and Ryan Mountcastle. Mountcastle is a big guy. So is Rodriguez, and for that matter, Sig Mejdal. Austin Hayes is small. He is short, and not all that thick. They were giving away O's crab caps, which are great, by the way. They also were selling a six game ticket plan I hadn't heard a

  3. I went to the O's Caravan at Turf Valley Resort today at 11:00 A.M. First, for anyone who might want to see pictures, I've posted some on the Orioles Hangout Facebook page. Turns out the O's caravan was just about autographs. There was no Q&A session or speeches. They were doing a few giveaways and ticket selling as well. Today it was Mike Elias and Hanser Alberto. Brian Roberts was also supposed to be there, but he couldn't make it. I met a couple of friends there who got there 20 mins early and who told me at that time the line was out the door and into the parking lo

  5. Who peed in your cheerios? Most of the time teams do win a couple of years after having a quality farm system. The addition of young, cheap and high quality players is a major boost to a team's chances of winning - like when the Cubs won, when the Astros won (still field a high quality team even with the cheating), the Rays ability to consistently compete. The Os will not compete again until we have a very strong farm system.

  9. It's too early for these sorts of threads and I don't really have anything noteworthy to add. I just loathe the nickname "GrayRod" and wanted to make sure I didn't have to see it all year like I did for his thread last year. Here's to hoping for a good (and healthy) year in Frederick.

  10. No, not to trade. To graduation. The O's hope that MLB rated #4 Mountcastle, #6 Hays, #11 Akin, # 15 Harvey and #21 Bailey all graduate to the majors in the next few months. The will add two or three prospects from the amateur draft. How will this effect the O's overall rating for the farm system?
    1 point
  11. I don't think those 5 graduating to the majors will affect the farms rating very much. Mountcastle is the only Top 100 guy of the 5, and whoever is drafted at #2 will possibly be ranked higher. The competitive balance pick and 2nd rounder should/could land in our top 15. Having a highly ranked farm doesn't always equal success at the MLB level though, and these guys will need to perform in an Orioles uniform. A strong farm gives us a lot more options though if these guys do perform, with cost controlled players and trade chips further down the road. We need to continue to draft well and

  12. Tearing it down wasn't a reasonable option, especially with the O's best crop of talent in a long time entering their primes. Wieters, Jones, and Davis were all 26. Markakis was 28. Manny Machado was ready. There was still reasonable hope at the time that Tillman, Arrieta, and Britton could be a solid rotation. I feel like there is a lot of revisionist history about the DD-era just because things are so lousy now. I think he did a really great job, especially with what he had to deal with. The biggest issue of that era, in my opinion, is they did not succeed in improving the player d

  14. Live footage from back then is a hell of a lot different from today. Today's footage is 3-5 seconds of the singer, then it goes to a fade out or moving camera, then to another band member, then some people in the crowd, then back and forth, back and forth. This video, they show the band members. Not until just before 8 minutes in (a bit of irony?) do they cut to that one dude wearing a bow tie in the crowd who is stoned out of his gourd. Of course, the band is also, but they're playing. A couple of original Skynard Freebird videos show the crowd at least 30 percent of the songs.

  15. 2012 didn't have to happen. It wasn't preordained. A lot of things went right. If God simulated 2012 1000 times probably 700 of them the O's finish under .500. 2014 probably doesn't happen with 2012. Duquette's plans worked out very well, probably as well as they could have with moderate payrolls and a poor farm system. Tearing it all down was most certainly a reasonable option. Maybe a more reasonable option (without the 20/20 hindsight) than saying "hey, we're going to rely on like Nate McLouth and Chris Davis and Joe Saunders and Lew Ford to get us to the playoffs after 69 wins

  16. Elias probably wouldn't be here if Peter was still in charge. He would have interviewed, and Angelos would have said no to the rebuild, no to international investments, no to a real analytics department, and Elias would have turned it down. Just like the first 3-4 candidates did in 2011.

  20. Two weeks ago, I was in Miami, where a lot of fellow regulars at Duffy's Tavern on Red Rd. appreciate my Orioles cap because the Os used to spring-train there. When it dropped to 42 degrees and windy in the middle of the night, I moved from the unheated, thin-walled RV (1986 Mallard Sprinter) onto a couch in the house. Made me realize for the first time how much even concrete block can act as insulation, although a lot of fiberglass in the attic was probably the actual difference.

Remember the Peanuts cartoon where Charlie Brown is on the pitching mound in the middle of winter and Lucy interrupts his reverie? ”and four fingers means a snowball!!!” And then she walks off laughing and Charlie Brown just Sighs. 30. Sometimes I wonder if you say these things because you believe them, or just to be provocative. Armstong and Givens both debuted in 2015. Armstrong has a career 1.3 rWAR and 4.34 ERA. His ERA was 5.74 last year. Before he was out of options, he was shuttled back and forth to the minors regularly, and accordingly, he has only amassed 116 innings in the big leagues. Givens has been a mainstay of the Orioles’ bullpen since his call-up in 2015, never returning to the minors. He’s amassed 6.4 rWAR and a 3.40 ERA in 323 big league innings. His 4.57 ERA last year was the worst
