  1. I am beyond baffled that they use different baseball. It makes zero sense, They are prospects, because they are learning, so you give them equipment that is different from what they will be using in the bigs?

  3. 1. Quality of the players offered in return. 2. How close are they to major league ready? 3. Do we have other players in the system who can do that player’s job without losing too much? 4. If not, how hard would it be to acquire a suitable replacement in free agency? We see Tampa trade players who are pretty key all the time, and yet they remain contenders We can’t refuse to consider trades just because the player could be useful to us as contenders

  5. And I think our primary alignment has RM/TM sharing 1B/DH most of the time. But Santander has been visibly gimpy with the ankle all week and Hyde wanted to get him a day off from RF on the turf today and still wanted his bat in the lineup over DJ vs the lefty, so he put Santander at DH.

  7. You would have enjoyed the job of "Photographer" for a local news affiliate's sports department. They spent more time taking upskirt videos of women in the crowd than of the game action they were recording for the newscast's sports highlights.

  9. That's some Rob Long ridiculousness - he's the only one whom i have heard voice such foolishness. For a century we said RBIs. Then some think-they-know-it-alls tried to change the living language. So smart they fooled themselves... Why is it Ks for the plural when that's a notation, not an initialism? Why is it Ks for the active verb? Why is it DHing when it is not Designated Hittering. In these cases, it is because that is what the living language says it is. Like how we just say "socials' now instead of "social media." Why isn't it 1 BBs for 1 Base-on-Balls? Why do we refer to the

  10. I hate it when they show a view of the bullpen and the announcer says "double barrel action..." They don't make double barrel bb guns, as far as I know.

  11. Yeah, neither part of that was MC's fault. But it is what happens when an inexperienced outfielder is gunshy and can't call of the infielder when it's clearly his ball.

  19. As a college player, Frelick probably is the BPA, or maybe Kumar or Leiter, over a HS...what you're saying is you don't think he's the best future talent available. BPA isn't as cut and dried as you're trying to make it out to be...and that's especially true in the MLB draft. You're trying to balance ceiling, with likelihood to reach it, with floor. But the variety of outcomes is exceedingly high, even at the top of the draft. You make it sound as if there is a very clear pecking order, with large gaps differentiating the players, and that's just not the reality. I agree though tha

  20. Game Notes: -- Orioles have lost 13 straight road games, I think that is closing in on the team record -- Jorge Lopez has allowed 3 or fewer runs in 9 of his last 10 starts -- Rich Hill had a 7.80 ERA (59 ERA+) for the Orioles in 2009. In the next five years, he just pitched for a combined 75 innings total in the majors. Then he reemerged in 2015 and since then he has put up ERAs of 2.27, 2.39, 3.72, 3.97, 4.10, 3.99, and 3.80 so far this year.

  21. Oh great, now I have to worry about three names that I don't want to hear called at pick 5: Davis, Ford and Frelick. It would be absurd to pick Ford or Frelick when Kumar Rocker or Jordan Lawler are available. Three years ago when the system was barren, it might have made sense to go underslot at 1:5 to get more good prospects. Now the system is at a point where it's more important to get premium talent as opposed to getting a couple of extra guys with upside.

  23. I agree that I think we are done with the breadth of prospects trades. One more 1 for 4 trade and things start getting very tight in the low minors.

  24. Well, I think Three Run Homer is right that we need to take the whole season to evaluate whether Westburg or Ortiz is the better prospect. We challenged Ortiz a little by starting him in High A despite not playing above short season A in 2019 and not playing at the alternate site last summer. He hit very well at Aberdeen and is doing a solid job in AA now. With Westburg, a higher draft pick who did play at the alt site last summer, we gave him a conservative low A placement and he quickly showed he was too good for that level. He’s finding High A more challenging in the early going.

  25. I could not have told you there was a pitcher by that name in our organization. He’s a little long in the tooth for high A (he’ll be 26 next week), but he looks like a guy who might have found something this year (16 K’s in 9 IP). If he can keep that up he could move up quickly. https://www.baseball-reference.com/register/player.fcgi?id=bautis002fel

  26. You should always listen to see if you can get outstanding value in a trade, but it is possible to have too many prospects--too many to protect from the Rule V draft, too many to evaluate at the major league level. Right now the O's have a lot of interesting guys at AA and below and could very well face congestion issues in 1-2 years in the starting rotation and in the middle infield. It's a nice problem to have, but it can create frictions. Certainly I would target quality over quantity in any deals we make--if we trade Mancini or even Mullins or Means, it's more important than usual

  27. Our OF was very good in WAA last year as well. When you consider the depth and relative age of that group, it’s the strongest part of our team.

  28. And not only are some of us tired of watching us suck... but it would appear that we could be in a not-sucking situation if we start to accumulate and hold some of the mid-level resources that are part of making a not-sucking team. At some point they've got to decide the tide is turning, and that holding on to a few potentially valuable pieces is more important than trading them for a handful of magic beans that might sprout five years from now

  30. From the same table, aside from Mullins (2.1) giving Baltimore 1st place in CF, Oriole LF (0.4) is 5th in MLB and RF (0.1) 12th (but for RF, consider how recently Santander--already at 0.4--has returned). And so SteveA's point is not at all ludicrous. It's at 1st base, 2nd base, DH, and Catcher that we are in negative territory among the non-pitching positions.

  31. Keep in mind that it has taken Mullins parts of 4 seasons to get where he is. Means could have been a piece of a championship team last year but he is in year three. For those expecting that you can trade guys and replace them with top prospects you have to realize that for some prospects, even top ones, the finishing process that makes them valuable playoff team pieces can take 2-4 years. You aren't going to trade Santander, replace him with Yusniel Diaz, and not miss a beat.

  32. Bradish was drafted in the 4th round in 2018 (#121) and Ortiz 2019 in the 4th round (#118). Interesting to note that at one point, Ortiz, Gonzales, Bradish AND Tyler Irwin were all on the same team. The 2018 NM State team that made it to the regionals was a very fun team to watch!

  33. Oh yes, I am well aware of the small sample size stuff, and I’m happy to give him a chance, but I do not think he is the second coming, and if he’s so questionable with the bat, I really want him to be splendid on defense. I’ve made it clear that I don’t care if a guy can’t hit as long as he’s beautiful with the glove.

  34. There are, of course, exceptions, but I always like to see the top prospects check off the boxes as far as the minor leagues. I can't help but think those teams are there for some reason.
