Overall across the four levels, their walk rate is now at 10.6% of all plate appearances, up from 9.1% in 2019. That's an improvement of 17.3%.

  2. I ducked out of the Oriole game for a while to watch Mets-Bucs, with Gary Thorne. what a pleasure to listen to him, even in a fairly dull game with the Mets up 4-0.

  3. I have no problem if they draft a good player and sign him for underslot. Given how quick this signing was, it is almost certain that this was a pre-draft deal. I have a huge problem if they made pre-draft deals to save money on some of their earlier picks, and then wound up using those savings to line the Angelos' family's pockets instead of using it to draft high ceiling overslot talent later in the draft. We'll see, but given who the O's picked in later rounds it seems highly likely that the Orioles will spend well under their draft allotment. Getting less talent through the

  6. Yep, in his age 23 season, Hairston put up a .787 OPS in AAA in a league that averaged a .780 OPS. In his age 23 season, Jones is putting up an .895 OPS in AAA in a league that is averaging a .749 OPS.

  7. No it wasn’t. Hairston never hit as good as Jones is now at AAA. Hairston was .787 and .848 in AAA before getting called up. Jones is at .895 in AAA now. Valaika didn’t get over .800 in AAA until it was his fourth year in the league.

  11. It's obvious that the Orioles have horrible starting pitching, but I think we need to appreciate how historically bad the O's starting pitching is. The O's best starters this year have been John Means, Bruce Zimmerman, Travis Lakins and Spenser Watkins. They have made 26 starts. Here are the results from the Orioles' other starters, in ascending order of ERA (stats refer only to starting appearances): Jorge Lopez, 18 starts, 2-12, 5.95 ERA Dean Kramer, 12 starts, 0-7, 7.25 ERA Matt Harvey, 18 starts, 3-10, 7.70 ERA Keegan Akin, 8 starts, 0-5, 8.82 ERA Thomas

  13. I heard Ben McDonald on 105.7 say Rhodes could be the sleeper pick of this draft. He said last year he was stricken with injuries and Covid issues but they feel if he has all the tools to be a first round pick if he played another year of college.

  14. For me, I slot them this way: 1) Adley 2) GRod 3) Hall 4) Gunnar 5) Cowser 6) Westburg 7) Bradish 8. Norby 9) Haskin 10) Trimble I have Trimble at 10 right now because of his upside (and maybe can play the IF) and because Vavra has been hurt, Jones may not have a position and Baumann is still not looking like the guy he did prior to the injury. Any of those guys, especially Baumann, could pass Trimble if they get healthy and rolling. Note: Kjerstad would slot 5th for me if he was playing. For right now, I’m

  19. This is why the baseball executive aka Elias needs to make baseball decisions. The O's are going to lose 100+ games this season even with Mancini's team glue, clubhouse leadership, and likability. I have no question that Elias wants to trade him. I'm sure the O's can spin the trade to be doing Mancini a favor by trading him to a playoff team.

  21. The Orioles have compiled the highest ERA in both leagues, 5.64, and the worst WHIP in MLB, 1.49. It's been a team effort: among Orioles starters, only Means and Watkins (just 9.1 IP) have ERAs under 5.00. The next best is Zimmerman at 5.07. No team over the last ten years (I couldn't bear to go back any farther) has had a season-long ERA as high as 5.64, though the Tigers last year (at 5.63, when the Orioles were a shocking 16th best at 4.51) and the Orioles in 2019 (at 5.59) were real close. The Orioles had MLB's worst ERA in 2017 and 2018, and they will be hard to top this season. The

  26. I don't disagree, and overall the draft is exactly where we do need to be spending. In this case we got someone at 41 that some, like Law, had in their top 30. Perhaps they did negotiate before he was drafted and agreed to slightly underslot deal. And I'm completely fine with that as long as they did not pass on a higher player on their board in order to do so. Would love to be a fly on the wall at one of these drafts to see just how it all goes down.

  29. With the reduction of Minor League teams MLB lost the short season team that tends to get filled with the better/older College draftees and the Rookie league that are ready to move to make room for the late college rounds or early high school draftees. Your logic takes into account moving players up and down but not cutting loose. I like catchers so lets start there... Look at who is getting the most playing time and who isn't. Look at who is being moved to scout teams and up and down a lot... We have the Tennessee catcher (7th Rd), HS Kid Creed Willems (8th Rd) and NDFA Vi

  30. Mancini's OPS in June was .612. He didn't play last year because of cancer. He has basically zero defensive value. I really, really like Mancini, but I don't think he has nearly as much trade value as some posters seem to think. If I was a GM, I would worry about Mancini wearing down in the second half and I would worry about what he will cost relative to production next year. Add in the feel good value Mancini has to the Orioles and I just don't see a Mancini trade happening during this season. Maybe in the off season if he has a good second half, but I still don't think Mancini will bring ba

  31. I don't like people being selected for a job because of their gender. Or being excluded from a job for the same reason. Especially since gender now seems to be such a "fluid" concept. These broadcasters all seem to be solid professionals. But that wasn't the overriding reason any of them were selected for this broadcast. Fred Manfra should have declared himself a female. I enjoyed his play by play more than Melanie Newman's. Did I get political?

Most overrated hitters: Anthony Santander is 12th with a wRC+ of 77 compared to a projection of 112. Most underrated pitchers: John Means is first with an ERA- of 53 compared to a projected 110 (for ERA-, the lower, the better) Most overrated pitchers: Dylan Bundy is 2nd at 155 ERA- compared to projected 96; Jake Arrieta is 4th at 157 compared to 104; Matt Harvey is 13th at 178 compared to 137. Its pretty bad when you are projected to have an ERA- of 137 and exceed that by 41 poin

  36. As we all know, we won't really be able to judge and assess this draft for many, many years. But there are certain overall facets/trends of this Orioles draft that jump out that we can analyze and wonder what they mean in terms of what Elias is trying to do, and the state of our farm system. First we have to keep in mind that there was one unique thing about this draft: college seniors were a huge part of it for the first time ever. Because last year's college season was truncated/cancelled, and last year's draft was only 5 rounds, a lot of prospects who would normally have gone pro

  39. I think I would have Vavra higher than Trimble. Injury shouldn't really hurt his prospect status. Seems like similar upside but already has some success through AA. Is Kjerstad N/A or off your list? I would still have him in our Top 10 until we learn more about what's going on with him. The more I see of Westburg the higher I am on him. Even though he is #2 pick he has middle infield upside and has minors success through A+, looks ready for AA. I don't think I would trade him for Cowser if he was offered today. 1. Rutschman 2. Rodriguez 3. Hall 4. Kjerstad 5
