Free Agents of Note:
CB Jimmy Smith - He's over 30, guaranteed to miss multiple games every year, you spent a 1st round pick on Humphrey, you just gave Peters a big-money deal and you made Tavon Young one of the most expensive nickelback's in the league last year. Even if he's willing to take the veteran minimum, I honestly don't see any scenario where he's brought back.
DT Michael Pierce - I love Pierce ... but you've already paid Brandon Williams. Is this team willing to spend 20-30% of it's cap on one position? I doubt it considering they love spending 2nd and 3rd round picks on DT's and DE's. The franchise tag for DT's this year is expected to be $15.5 Mil.
OLB Matt Judon - I love Judon, but will this team spend big to keep him? Unless we franchise tag him, I see someone out there throwing big money at him. That brings up the question: he's good, but is he 'franchise tag' good? The tag value for LB's this year is expected to be over $16 Mil. I question whether he's worth that much, but (1) FA contracts seem to keep inflating the past few years and (2) he's really our only pass rusher.
MLB Patrick Onwuasor - They didn’t draft or sign anyone to replace Mosley because they were handing the job to Onwuasor ... and he was so bad that they replaced him w/ Bynes, who they signed off the street. He gone. Honestly, I think the only thing that could save him is the fact that we're looking at potentially losing all of our starting LB's in the same offseason. If the price is right, do you keep him as a backup/depth?
MLB Josh Bynes - He stepped up huge for us when he was brought in, but the reality is, he's an over-30 journeyman. Can you trust him to repeat the same performance next year? He was unemployed for a reason ... I think we let him go, but if we strike out in free agency and don't get the guy(s) we want in the draft, I could see them giving him a call when it's getting closer to training camp.
OLB Pernell McPhee - I think he is the same as Bynes. They let him walk, but if we don't get the guy we want in FA or the draft (and no one decides to overpay him), I think you see them give him a call.
S Anthony Levine - I think he's back if the price is right, but I get the feeling someone is going to overpay him.
RB Gus Edwards - I really like him, but I think they let him walk. I think someone will pay him more than we're willing to pay, he isn't going to displace Ingram and we just drafted Justice.
I think Judon and Pierce are the only two real options for the franchise tag this year. If anyone gets it, I think it's Judon.
C Matt Skura (RFA) - I made my opinions about Skura (and Bozeman) well known earlier this season. While they both looked better as the season went on, I honestly think that had more to do w/ our mobile QB than it did either of these guys getting better. Unfortunately, Skura injured his knee and we found out this week just how bad - he tore his ACL, MCL, PCL and dislocated his knee cap. He's under team control, but I'd be shocked if he's ready to start next season. Even if he is, is he really good enough that the team would/should just bring in a temporary replacement and hope that he gets back to 100%? Honestly, I would have been looking to replace him even if he was healthy.
RG Marshall Yanda - A future HoFer, but he'll be 36 next season. How long can he keep playing? At this point, does he even want to keep playing? O-line and D-line play is brutal on the body; especially when you're talking about a 12 year veteran who is inching closer to 40. This team should already be considering future replacements in the draft.
CB Brandon Carr - This is an option year for him. He lost his starting spot, we likely already have our starting 3 CB's for next year, he'll be 34 next season and he'll only be $1 Mil. in dead money if they decline the option, saving $6 Mil. against the cap. There's no benefit to waiting until June 1st, so I think he's one of the first guys cut.
