  1. Grich and Lou Whitaker aren't just borderline cases — they're both well above the threshold for 2b. Dewey Evans should've gone in instead of teammate Jim Rice. Dick Allen is more of a borderline case — shy on traditional counting stat milestones and brutal on defense but still managing to put up 156 OPS+ and 58.7 career WAR over a 14 year career. If he hadn't been hung with a 'clubhouse cancer' tag, he'd probably get more love.
  2. It's naive to think this stops with him getting a hit.
  3. There are only two good options for Davis. He flatlines again and forces the O's to cut bait. Or he mashes for half a season at an .800+ OPS and Elias is able to move him to a surprise contender + a big chunk of salary for a couple of B prospects. Let's call those odds 99:1. Anything in between just drags this stoopid situation out longer.
  4. He was a great — and influential — food critic. Naturally, lesser talents ripped him off.
  5. Checking in after a few years away, it's nice to see that calm, rational, level-headed, non-knee jerk thinking still rules the day at the OH. Oh, wait.
  6. 15 seasons of park factor data indicate otherwise.
  7. Parker broke down too early due to substance abuse and conditioning issues. Garvey was never anywhere near as good as he would tell you he was.
  8. Stargell died the same day that PNC Park was opened, IIRC.
  9. Lived in Richmond for years: the Fan, Oregon Hill, North Side-Bellevue, Church Hill. I knew Chris had a brewery; didn't know it was in Ashland.
  10. In Italian, Amaro means "bitter."
  11. Bob Andino is now a Pirate. http://www.bucsdugout.com/2013/7/31/4577118/pirates-make-a-trade
  12. Pirates swept yesterday's doubleheader and have outscored the Cards over the first 3 games of the series, 17-3.
  13. Gentlemen, I've raised the white whale. I believe I'm owed a gold doubloon.
  14. For the record, I wasn't accusing calm of being a sock-puppet persona for Trea. Just noting their mutual ability to keep hammering away at the same point in the face of overwhelming facts & logic (not to mention ad hominem attacks).
  15. That was Trea's MO as well. Didn't make him any less infuriating, or disruptive. Which reminds me: what happened to Orioles Anonymous? No updates there since April.
  16. A few that come to mind: Jay Buhner, Brian Giles, Nomar. Good to great players with no shot at the HOF.
  17. I think back to this interview with Jays' owner Paul Beeston after last season, and specifically this exchange: ...and I like to think that the O's unexpected success in 2012 really greased the skids for this year's trainwreck in Toronto. And, yeah, that gives me warm fuzzies. Both Jack Z and AA could very well find themselves out of work this off-season. Fangraphs will eat a huge portion of crow, and they'll have earned it, too.
  18. And 2 games back of the 2nd NL wild card. They had hardly packed it in at that point. And again: why did no one pick him up to bolster a bullpen or use as a spot starter down the stretch? He wasn't dinged up.
  19. And why did no else take a flyer on you down the stretch, Erik? The Pirates were still 9 games over .500 on August 28 when they released Bedard.
  20. This is why he was released by the Pirates last August when they still had a puncher's chance at the division, and why no one else picked him up for the stretch drive.
  21. It's impossible to overstate how pointless the Home Run Derby is.
