  1. I’m not sure where to start or what to say. Death does that. Those of us who have had the pleasure to meet Mike Flanagan will always have the stories – some told second-hand – and we will remember his kindness and his love of a city that adopted him as one of our own. He was a man many knew simply by one name. Before him, there was Brooks and then there was Elrod, Eddie and Cal, too. To all of us who love the Orioles, Mike Flanagan was simply “Flanny.”

Tonight has been very difficult for all of us. I don’t like to cry in public, but I am not ashamed on this night.

    Rest in peace.

  2. From Steve Melewski's blog:

Here is a statement from Andy MacPhail:

"On behalf of the Orioles, I wish to express our deepest appreciation to the town and residents of Bluefield for their support of the Orioles organization and over a thousand players who have worn the Bluefield Orioles uniform in the last 53 seasons. While extremely difficult, we believe the decision to end our affiliation with Bluefield is in the best interest of the franchise moving forward. The history of Orioles baseball is not complete without Bluefield, and we have enormous respect and gratitude for the club and the community that helped launch the careers of legends such as Cal Ripken Jr. and Boog Powell. We hope and expect that the next organization in Bluefield enjoys as long and as productive a relationship as we have enjoyed."

  3. If the Orioles' recent trends are any indication, he could report to Aberdeen to "work out" like Matt Wieters and Brian Matusz did in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Both Wieters and Matusz were not active while with the Ironbirds, but they took part in team activities, traveled, etc.

  5. I realize I might be stating the obvious here, but Baysox manager Brad Komminsk just confirmed that Pelzer is scheduled to join Double-A Bowie on Friday.

Komminsk wasn't sure if Pelzer would be used as a starter or reliever. Pitching coach Kennie Steenstra still had yet to be officially briefed on Pelzer when I caught up with him following Thursday's game, but told me to check back with him on Friday.

  6. I asked Komminsk if there was a possibility Hoes stays with Bowie for more than three days. He said "as of now" it's only a three-day assignment.

Guzman will head to New York on Tuesday and is expected back by Thursday when the Baysox begin a four-game series with New Britain at Prince George's Stadium. He made his home in Tampa, Fla. for a few years before relocating to the Bronx this past offseason.

Congratulations to Joel, by the way.

  7. Just confirmed with Baysox manager Brad Komminsk that L.J. Hoes will join the team for its three-game road trip in Akron this week. Hoes will take the roster spot of Joel Guzman, who is traveling to New York to finalize his United States naturalization process.

    I'll have more later.

Thanks to OH Keys beat writer Adam Vencill for providing the tip.

  8. Zach told me over the phone today that, as of now, he'll be inserted into the last slot in Norfolk's rotation once the second half begins. That means he's not scheduled to start again until next Monday.

"They have some things they want to see play out," Britton said. "They told me just be ready to throw in that last slot, enjoy the Futures Game and we’ll see what happens."

I'll have a brief story on Zach's trip to Anaheim on the front page later today.

  9. Left-hander Zach Britton received word from Orioles director of player development John Stockstill during Monday's Baysox doubleheader that he has been promoted to Triple-A Norfolk.

He will join the Tides on Tuesday in Charlotte and make his Triple-A debut on Thursday.

Reaction from Britton and Baysox coaches can be found HERE
