  1. Gary Thorne not only does Orioles broadcast, but he also does LLWS, College Hockey, NHL, and I think baseball games for ESPN. Doing all that, I'm sure he has to maintain an objective point of view and I think it carries over to the O's broadcast, and I think that's why he rubs certain listeners the wrong way. Does he get a few names and pitches wrong? Sure. Does he get overly excited at opposing teams homeruns? Maybe. But for the most part he does a really good job. And we're actually lucky to have him as an announcer.

  2. It's better to have a cop at a school, than no cop, but if someone really wants to create chaos and carnage, and has the time and sickness to plan out something like this, they will likely be able to neutralize the cop before the rampage starts.

In other words, if someone really wants to do this...and is crazy enough...there isn't much that can stop them.

I also believe that school should start to have active shooter drills, if they haven't done so already, just like they do fire drills.

Today my kids are doing a lockdown drill. I tried to explain to my youngest it was just a drill and that there was nothing to worry about, but he still seemed a little upset before we left the house.

  3. The late, great, Buck O'Neil, via Ken Burns-

I was too young to appreciate him. (Born in '85) From what I know, I would rather have Trout or Harper though.

They told this story on the 30 for 30 doc. He was taking his first batting practice after signing with the Royals and it was the first BP pitch he saw. He hit it to dead center either over the crown or it hit the top of the crown. Either way, it was a shot.

  4. I kinda thought its ironic, Hamilton gets bashed in Texas. Yet, Washington had a relapse two years ago, and barely a word mentioned. Washingtons post game after the one game playoff was a little eerie. I dont think hes long for Texas either. His antics are growing stale for me.

    o

Add last years WS choke job, not putting Chaves in for Cruz, and the fact that he more or less threw the team under the bus for not "executing" and he'd be gone. Couple all that with Washingtons use of Holland the last game of the year and in the one game playoff, that would have been enough for me to see that this guy can't coach under pressure.

  5. I had read that there might be less power outages because of the infrastructure repairs/upgrades that took place after that derecho. I didn't believe it, but I guess there was some validity.

Had this been a typical late August early Sept. hurricane with the thunder and lightning thats associated with it, I think we would be seeing closer to 1M outages.

  6. You need to pump the brakes there Dannyboy. There is evidence that the ball did hit the pole as shown earlier in this thread. If you don't believe it that's on you, but

let everyone else deal with it how they will.

There is evidence that the ball appears to hit the pole. IMO, its the shadow of the ball on the pole that gives the illusion of it hitting the pole. If you really want to see if the ball hit the pole you need to see it from above. Either way, this call had little to no effect on the out come of the game.

  7. Besides the fact that most outdoor paints are anything but flat latex--and besides the fact that that the ball BARELY NICKED the pole----why in the hell would you expect paind on the ball??? Go throw a ball DIRECTLY INTO A FENCE OR POLE WITH ENAMEL PAINT-----YOU AIN'T SEE'N NO PAINT.

The ball didn't hit the pole. Get over it

  8. "However, the usher at the top of 207 said the ball did barely nick the foul pole." - Craig Sager. It obviously hit the foul pole.. would it have changed the out come of the game? Possibly but I'm not going to dwell on it.

Sager also had the ball in his hands and he said there wasn't any yellow paint on it.

  9. I have always thought Gammons has been very fair, even generous, in his coverage of the Orioles when he was at ESPN and MLB-TV. I tend to take the charitable interpretation of what he said, i.e., that it was cool to see the players out there watching with the fans. Maybe he will clarify.

I feel the same way too. I watch him on NESN and his comments towards the O's have been nothing short of complimentary.

  10. Seems to me Tampa still controls their destiny. If OAK, LAA, and Tampa all win out, then LAA and Tampa have a one game playoff to determine who the second wild card is. That to me still means they control their own destiny.

If OAK, LAA, and Tampa all win out, Tampa and LAA would still be 2 behind OAK. and out of the playoffs.

  11. On the other hand, mother and baby will be in the hospital at least till Saturday, if it was a C-section, they'll be at the hospital through the weekend. They'll be nurses, doctors, family and friends to help; I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mrs Wieters INSISTED on Matt being at the Yard tonight.
I think it went something ike this...

  12. I live in Philly and these people looooove Juan Pierre. Supposedly, he is a pro's pro and he's still very effective.

Having him and McLouth go 1-2 would be a great idea. He is making less than a mils I don't know if he passes through waivers.

He cleared according to mlb trade rumors.

  13. On the pre-game today, Jim Hunter said if they aquire a player now, via trade, that player would have to be on a 40-man roster before Sept. 1 in order to be eligible for post season play. So, if the O's aquire Juan Pierre, he could get on the post season roster because he was on the Phillies 40-man before 9/1. Of course, he would have to replace someone that goes on the DL.

  14. With all the injuries this team has had, I seriously doubt that Buck is going to want to get into a bean ball war. The team has a goal, and getting even with the yankees for what happened tonight isn't going to help this team achieve that goal. With Nick out for the season the team needs to stay focused now more than ever. You want to get even, do it on the score board and in the standings.
