  6. o (ALCS, Game Two) ***************** Justin Verlander is pitching this game of 4 days' rest, after having a bad game on 3 days' rest when manager AJ Hinch went for the kill against the D-Rays in Game 4 of the ALDS. In 4 consecutive starts down the stretch between September 3rd and September 21st, James Paxton had an 0.36 ERA with an 0.689 WHIP, wracking up 29 Strikeouts with only 6 Walks over 24.67 Innings Pitched. ) ) He did give up 2 Runs in only 1 Inning Pitched in his final start of the regular season after that on September 27th, but that was after the Yankees had already locked up the #2 overall seed and were setting their pitching rotation up for the upcoming post-season. o I'm not going to be overly concerned (unless and until) the Astros are down 3 games to 0 ........ maybe I'll be concerned if it is 3 games to 1. Houston's pitching is that good, that even if they lose a game or 2 early in the series, they are strong enough to still be favored (and expected to) to win the next game and get themselves right back into the series. One reason why I like Best-of-7 series better than Best-of-5 series is that a team is less likely to win via a large dose of luck ........ not that the Yankees are/were necessarily lucky (they are VERY good, and they are the biggest threat to keeping the Astros out of another World Series appearance), but I do believe that the Astros are better, and hence I still believe that it is more likely that they will wind up on top as American League champions when all is said and done. I would still put the odds at about 57% - 43% that the Astros will win this ALCS. If the Yankees win tonight to go up 2 games to 0, I still won't be panicked, but I would then switch the odds of winning the series to them (probably something like 60% to 40% in favor of the Yankees.) o
  9. o Thurman Munson, another tragic plane crash victim from the 70's, also had an outstanding arm behind home plate. The Clemente and Munson plane crashes that occurred 7 years apart in 1972 and 1979 respectively were 2 of the saddest incidents of my baseball memories from my childhood. o
  10. o (vs. NATIONALS, 10/12) )))))) [NLCS, Game 2] History has essentially repeated itself ........ Wainwright threw 7 Innings of 1-Run ball with 0 Walks and 11 Strikeouts in to begin the game, but his offense has been shut out on the scoreboard. Wainwright did cede 2 additional runs in the 8th inning before being removed from the game, giving the Nationals some breathing room down the stretch. o

o (ALCS, Game One) ***************** Since July 20th, Masahrio Tanaka has a 5.45 ERA and a 1.380 WHIP in 13 games ........ on the positive side, he has only 15 Walks and has Struck out 54 Batters in 71 Innings Pitched in that same span. That's a [3.6 to 1] Strikeouts-to-Walks Ratio, and a [1.901] Walks-Per-9-Innings Ratio. Zack Greinke has been very consistent in his numbers since being traded from the Diamondbacks to the Astros on July 31st ........ his ERA was 2.90 with the Diamondbacks, and has been 3.02 with the Astros. 15. o Merv Rettenmund. My Orioles fandom began when I was a 6 year-old boy, in first grade in October of 1971. Growing up in Brewster, NY, it was pretty unusual for a kid to adapt the Orioles as his favorite team, but I did. The Orioles were playing the Pirates in the World Series. I remember the last two games of the series (Game 6 and Game 7.) My whole family was rooting for the Pirates because they liked Roberto Clemente, so naturally, I rooted for the Orioles. After the final groundout to end Game Seven which give the Pirates the series, my whole family whooped it up in the living room, and I went outside, put my face in my hands, and pouted on the swing-set in our back yard up here in Brewster, NY. I later found out that the player who grounded out for that final out of Game Seven (and I remember it vividly) was Merv Rettenmund. o

  21. o Not only did Lolich pitch those 2 complete games in that 1968 World Series, he also pitched (and won) a 3rd complete game on October 3rd ....... so he pitched a Complete Game in Game Two (October 3rd), another Complete Game in on 3 days' rest in Game Five (October 7th), and yet another Complete Game on 2 days' rest in Game Seven (October 10th.) ) o
  22. o Dave McNally, the man who needed the bailing out from Drabowsky in Game One, pitched a CG-Shutout on 3 days' rest in Game Four ........ the first thing that comes to mind in relatively recent anomalies such as this is when Josh Becket did just that in Game 6 of the 2003 World Series for the Marlins against the Yankees. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYA/NYA200310250.shtml Unlike McNally, who was taken out early in Game One in favor of Drabowsky in 1966, Beckett had pitched 7.33 innings in his previous game (Game 3), throwing 108 pitches in the process ........ so veteran manager Jack McKeon as really going out on a limb by gambling with Beckett on 3 days' rest in 2003, particularly considering the fact that the climate in regard to the treatment of starting pitchers was very much like it is now (closely followed pitch-counts, very rarely having starting pitchers throwing complete-games, rarely having starting pitchers going on 3 days' rest, etc.) o
