1. MLB.com's Richard Justice says Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter is the best in the game when it comes to maximizing his players' talent. https://www.pressboxonline.com/2016/05/18/richard-justice-buck-showalter-is-the-best-manager-in-baseball
2. What's left in this long closed theme park is still fascinating to me. I went the year it opened when I was 8. It's also been open for a weekend in October for a few years now. Gonna try to make it back in June. http://myfox8.com/2016/05/15/land-of-oz-theme-park-in-nc-opening-for-limited-time-next-month/ Here's my sister with me on the same vacation at the nearby Tweetsie Railroad in Blowing Rock NC.
3. Baltimore Orioles (7-2, 1st +2.5) @ Texas Rangers (6-5, T-1st +0.5) Streak / L10 BAL: N/A TEX: N/A Game 2 (8:10) (QS=0)Vance Worley (0-0) 3.86 (1.71/.333), 5/1 (1HR) vs. (QS=2)Martin Perez (0-1) 3.65 (1.46/.225), 3/9, (1HR) Vance Worley: Worley allowed three runs in 4.2 innings in his 2016 debut giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits, a walk and five strikeouts. He did ok for the first four innings, but could not get through the fifth and was probably left out there too long. His stuff did look pretty good for the first four and he'll look to build on that here. He has never
4. http://www.orioleshangout.com/article/5515/minor-league-game-summaries-411 Chance Sisco played a key role in the Baysox 11-9 win tonight. The 20-year old catcher went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in three runs. He's the Hangout Milb Player of the Night! Tides [AAA] Won 7 to 6 Ariel Miranda, the 27 year old lefty the Orioles signed from Cuba last May, made his AAA debut tonight. (4.2 IP, 6 H, ER, 2 BB, 6 K). Audry Perez homered tonight and drove in two. Christian Walker hit his secodn home run in five games and is batting .389 so far. Dariel Alvarez went 2-for-4 with an RBI double. Ba
5. The latest HOTSHEET has been posted. Chance Sisco and Trey Mancini lead the way with scorching hot bats of late. Joe Gunkel and Ariel Miranda have been the hottest performing starting pitching prospects in August. http://orioleshangout.com/article/5300/orioles-prospect-hotsheet-mid-august-edition
6. When Jason Garcia batted against Ike Davis today, it occurred to me I've never seen an AL pitcher batting against an AL position player (at least in the DH-era.) Then it occurred to me that maybe today was the first time since 1973 that it's happened. Anybody know for sure? It couldn't have happened more than one or two times in the past if at all. When it happened, I gave my daughter the old "it's amazing how often you see something you've never seen at a baseball game" speech, but she wasn't too impressed. I figured some of you guys might be, though.
7. 16 of his 20 home runs are solo homers simply because the bottom of the order players are not getting on base for him. This team is wasting his power by batting him lead off. I know his stolen bases would probably drop off a little, but I would take RBI over stolen bases any day.
8. I went to the Nats-Dodgers game yesterday and wow was Clayton Kershaw nasty! 8 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 BB, 14 K's for a game score of 90. His fastball was sitting at 94-95 and he cranked it up to 96 a few times. But was really impressed me was his breaking stuff. Throwing 74 mph curve balls that broke a mile that he could either throw for a strike or not, depending on what he wanted it to do, and an 88-89 mph offspeed pitch (couldn't really tell if it was a sinker, slider or straight change) that seemed to break straight down as it reached home plate. He is really impressive to watch up

10. A few weeks ago we were at a game at Marlins Park where the Dodgers were the visiting team and for part of the game they lost the sound and scoreboards but were able to play. Last night I was at home watching some of the Nats game on TV and one of the banks of lights went out and the Dodgers were the visiting team. They had an over an hour delay and then shortly after they resumed they went out again and continued the game today.

13. Per the MLB.com standings, the O's expected Won-Loss record based on 12 RS and 7 RA, is 1-1. They are just not that good.
14. I'm going on record -- Ubaldo is going to have a pretty good season for us. Maybe not as good as his 2013 season, but a big improvement over last year. I say he'll post an ERA under 4.00. Posting a poll so others can weigh in. I'm sure there will be many skeptics.
15. Young is expected to pass his physical and be added the O's 40 man roster soon. My guess on who is DFA'd to make room of the roster is Lavarnway or Paredes. Both are out for options. I believe either would be outrighted to Norfolk but they have to pass through waivers before that assignment can take effect. Neither Larvarnway or Paredes has been outrighted before so they would have to accept the assignment to Norfolk.
16. Who would you rather have down the stretch, Oswalt, Greinke, Garza, Dempster, assorted others or Tilman? Now that Machado has shown signs of being a solid major leaguer, was Headly really worth Jake, Matusz and a top position prospect? The fact that we are competing without giving away any top prospects bodes well for the future. Maybe DD is lucky, maybe he's a mad genius, whatever. I like where we are right now and I like the direction DD is taking this franchise.

MLB Gameday

So I dont have MASN (I actually dont have any TV broadcast, my TV is only here to play DVDs really.) and I wont get MLB.tv because of the blackout rules. I listen to Joe Angel and Fred Manfra and follow along on MLB GameDay for the up-to-date stats. This spring GameDay has been atrocious, is it usually like this during the spring and I just forgot, or is it going to be this bad this season?

19. They track every pitch throw these days right? How would one find out what is actually the exact average fastball velocity? I would guess they can break it down by left handers and right handers? Also interested in how long they have these stats and if there has been a decrease in the average FB since the "end" of the steroid era?
20. With the Orioles playing a night game tonight, we were able to take a quick drive over to the Twin Lakes Park/Buck O'Neill Sports Complex just down the street -- what a treat not to have to drive 3 hours! Matt Hobgood pitched his first live BP of the season (or of his career? not sure), and I was able to capture a bit of it.
