Orioles to Spend This Winter?

Recommended Posts

The Lerners are loaded and have no problem negotiating with Boras directly. Two keys which will make them the favorite for Prince.

I've recently heard them referred to as the Yankees of the NL for the money they are willing to spend on their club.

And LaRoche is no roadblock. He's only got a two year deal from the Nats with a team option.

What will they do for 2012 with both LaRoche and Fielder on their contract then? Put LaRoche in LF?

Honestly, this wouldn't surprise me that much. I think the smarter move, as I posted in my Adam Jones thread, would be to blow it up. But with Buck in the fold, that's definitely not going to happen. MacPhail's been here awhile as well, and I doubt he's ready to admit defeat, either. So I wouldn't be that surprised if they went all in. Might not be the smart move, especially long term, but it would certainly turn some heads.

Also add to it that Angelos is getting very old. Maybe the three of them are looking for a hail mary.

The Orioles will make a run for Fielder, but I see no reason why he would sign here considering the other clubs that may be interested in him.

1.) Giants

2.) Angels

3.) Cubs

4.) Padres?

5.) Blue Jays?

6.) Tampa Bay?

7.) Indians?

8.) Mariners?

I could see the Giants, Angels, and Cubs as being real problems for us. I just do not think this guy comes here if he wants to play on the west coast and if he wants to play on the east coast then I think he signed with the Cubs or Rays.

Giants have Brandon Belt as their 1B of the future, and will likely want to keep Lincecum and Cain, long term. So they'll have to spend big money to keep those two pitchers.

Pending on Morales' health, the Angels already have their 1B.

If the Padres didn't have the money to keep Adrian Gonzalez, where will they find it to sign Prince?

Where are the Rays and Indians going to get the money to sign him?

The Mariners have Justin Smoak at 1B.

The Cubs and Blue Jays are viable spots to land him. As are the Rangers. The Cardinals could be in the mix, too, if they lose Pujols.

The only possible suitors on this list are the Jays. And they have other options. The clubs interested in Pujols and Fielder will be the Gnats, Cubs, Cards, O's and Texas. My bet would be Pujols/Cubs and Fielder/Texas. But if Texas doesn't have or want to spend the money, then Fielder will be between the Gnats and the O's.

I don't see the Rangers. Between Napoli, Davis, Young, and Moreland, I think they're probably pretty pleased with their 1B/DH situation. Plus they just gave Beltre that big contract. If they have a bunch of money lying around, I think you'll use it extend Hamilton, not buy Fielder.

Cubs and Jays are probably the frontrunners with the O's and the Angels on the next tier down. Nats seem to have become a wild card, so you can't count them out.

I don't think they'll go to a seventh year with Fielder, either.

But 5/105 or 6/125 wouldn't really surprise me.

Prince turned 27 in May, so we'd have him from 28-32 or 28-33, depending on the length of the deal.

I've been saying this for awhile, I fully expect the O's to bid on Fielder. They offered Tex 7yrs $145M. I do not think they will offer Fielder that 7th year, but I do think they will over him $20.7M per year over 5 or 6 years.

I will not be surprised if the O's also bid on Darvish.

In what world is Fielder signing for 5/105 or 6/125?

Not any one that Boras or Fielder is living in.

That will be about $35 million short, just like they were with Tex. Just how they like it. Make it look like you are trying, then spend 1/6th of the money on garbage 1 year stopgaps who have no future with the club. Sell it to the fanbase who is looking for something to latch on, rinse and repeat.

Name me a team that needs him more than the Orioles do. The Cubs? The Giants? Not the Dodgers. No one in the A.L. needs him like the Orioles do. No one.
The O's need Fielder a lot but not for $200M. 7/$150 but that's about it. The Gnats might offer more.

Anyone think we could make a run at Pujohls? (Sorry im sure I spelled it wrong) Doesnt look like their will be a ton of big spenders. I'd say he'd be worth higher avg dollars over a shorter period (4 or 5 years)? Not sure about this but is it possible?

The chances of Pujols leaving St. Louis are slim.

As for Fielder, I have not been an advocate for getting him due to his weight issues, but the guy is swinging a mean bat. If he falters in year 4 or 5 of the deal, then so be it, we do at least need to make him a competitive offer that gives us a real option of him choosing here.

That said, there ain't a chance in HELL of Pujols nor Fielder wearing an Orioles jersey next year, unless they like it and buy themselves one for Christmas!

This will be a fun six months. I know Fielder is a top priority. Victor Martinez was a top priority this year. VMat is doing fine at first base and backing up Wieters. We will be the team that had the second best offer. We just missed out but we got a low risk signing. Pena or Huff or Lee are fine. They used to be good or had good years.
