Orange Throat?

Recommended Posts

Long time reader, first time poster. I was looking for some information from the Reds point of view and came across the below. I thought it was too good not to post. The names and some other information was changed to protect the informant but it appears to be about the Orioles:

http://www.redszone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64146

According to their breakdown, these are what the names equal, though the author said Johnson is not Markakis:

"Roger" = Angelos

"Bob" = McPhail

"Sanchez" = Tejada

"Miller" = Roberts

"Ricky" = Bedard

"Johnson" = Markakis

This is what the author said after being contacted about the info. by the Reds board:

I can tell you that Johnson is not Nick Markakis and that Roger and Bob are backward on your list. (They are switched correctly above)

I can also tell you that the scout type/ FO member is not Mike Flanagan.

And unless the Reds are willing to part with Homer Bailey or Jay Bruce, Bedard won't land in Cincinnati. Baltimore has offers from at least three clubs that start with a top position player prospect and include a promising starting pitcher or the prospect equivalent of.

Without Bailey or Bruce, Cincinnati can't even get into the conversation, since Baltimore isn't interested in any free agents to be (Dunn), older players (Griffey) and other parts that may not be around or worthy in 2010-2011 (Harang, Arroyo).

Bailey and Phillips gets you Bedard, but that isn't something the Reds should consider.

Bruce and Phillips, neither. Cueto, Votto and Stubbs might get their attention, but in the end the other official offers include better and/or more ready overall talent, and/or include a cheap, all-star level option at a premium position up the middle.

The question is, if Flanagan didn't say this, who did?

That was an interesting post to read, thanks. More fuel to the flame though, and who knows if any of this is made up or not. But still interesting.

I can't think of anyone matching this description:

"played here for three years in the 70s and was around the club in the 80s and when I came back after the 2002 season, it was like I’d never been here before."

The biographical details could have been blurred somewhat, as somebody obviously was going out of his way to be discreet.

Clearly the team in question is the Orioles. Nothing really new here -- anybody who has been watching closely has figured out that MacPhail is blowing the team up.

Two things do pop out at me:

1) the suggestion that MacPhail already has offers for Bedard that he feels he can live with, and is just waiting people out in the hopes that someone sweetens the deal;

2) the intimation that MacPhail is on a leash even if it has been loosened somewhat.

Well he did say that Bedard is definitely being dealt, which the other teams may not have thought at this point. Honestly, the fact that anyone in our organization is doing this kind of interview makes me sick. Is it that hard to keep stuff close to the vest?

How about Dave Johnson. Didn't he play for the O's for three years? I wouldn't call him a fO scout type but he is employed by the organzation.

Seemingly it was not an interview, but a private conversation that went public after the recipient heavily obscured the details.

Much more revealing stuff is put out here by the insiders.

Any ML team that still thinks Bedard is not on the block is really not paying attention.

I guess I agree, I just don't see why someone high up in our staff would be having this type of conversation with a blogger, or anyone outside the organization for that matter. Its incredibly obvious who everyone is and that its about the Orioles.

Unless it's all a hoax. It could be you know.

If this is Flanagan, he may figure MacPhail has a leash because he was on one...

"Johnson" I think might be Huff, "Adam" I think is Payton. "Finley" isn't mentioned much so my guess he's Millar....

Doesn't Jim Beattie work for the Reds in some way?

Yeah but he wouldn't refer to himself as being part of the Orioles, also he never played for them. It's clearly Flanagan, but some things were changed...

My guess is MacPhail is going to be pretty upset when he finds out about this...

People gossip all the time. It's a fact of life. They do it for many reasons: to show off about what they know, to provoke somebody else into revealing what they know, to advance an agenda... It just happens. I'll bet at least three or four articles on the front page of the NY Times on any given day is based on people blabbing.

Re: the idea that it's a hoax... that could be. But if I were going to hoax, I'd make it more dramatic than that.

I agree, but that doesn't make it right.

Reds fans are now thinking Bailey/Cueto and Phillips is enough. I could do those two PLUS Votto, but not just those two. I'm I only get two players back from them, it's Bruce and Bailey. I think the Reds' are way overvaluing their guys.
