I hope Buck doesn't make the same mistake with Machado as he made last season with keeping Hardy in the 2 spot all year even though he struggled in that role.

I think Manny's bat will come alive sooner than later though.

It's only been 3 games. I actually like Manny in the 2 spot. He is pretty selective and he should get some good pitches to hit in the 2 spot.

Selective? Perhaps my memory is more selective... or yours is... but I seem to remember Manny flailing at a lot of pitches out of the zone a la Jones in 2008.

He's been rushed up to the majors. I think once he gains some confidence, he will be a much more selective hitter than what he showed last year. He did well in ST in that area and it's only 3 games so far.

It is a little odd, IMO, that Reimold's hitting 9th and Manny is 2nd. On the other hand, I refuse to draw too many conclusions after a series in Tampa Bay. Their pitchers aren't exactly slouches, just don't ask Davis or Jones.

April 7 vs. Twins

Nick Markakis RF

Manny Machado 3B

Chris Davis 1B

Adam Jones CF

Steve Pearce DH

J.J. Hardy SS

Nolan Reimold LF

Taylor Teagarden C

Alexi Casilla 2B

Jason Hammel RHP

Interesting that Pearce is batting 5 and Reimold is batting 7. As I said on Friday, Reimold is not swinging well right now. Pearce had the hot bat in spring and had some good swings on opening day. Nothing else really of note here. We'll miss Wieters bat against a LHP but I agree with the day off. Hopefully, Teagarden has one hit in him and it comes at a good time.

This lineup sure is missing Betemit today. Really would like to have a lefty at DH. If they get anything out of Pearce, it'll be a bonus.
We are missing that good LH bat. With Roberts and Betemit out, we should consider bringing up Dickerson. We are short on the bench as it is, and we really don't need Arrieta for a week at least..

It really sucks to be out both Roberts and Reimold for the sake of the bottom of our lineup. I have no hope of Flaherty or Pearce to put up worthwhile at bats.

    • People (including me) have been focused on losing that spot for Rule 5 protection if we retain Davis this winter, but it also impacts us every time we make a waiver claim and have to DFA someone to open up a spot for the claimed player.
    • Seems just like the old SG to take a few quotes and then start bashing our FO and ownership for "dumb" things. IMO, the most telling quote in the link was also the one ME explained.  The revenue situation is uncertain.  ME is quoted as saying, "We can't estimate our revenue, our attendance ....  We can't estimate various things that we look at when we look at a player or roster budget."  In light of such uncertainty, it is quite a leap to say the FO is dumb for not pursuing a particular player - in this case, Stroman.  Most prudent, well-run businesses would operate in such as manner given the uncertainty. There are multiple ways to save $ with Chris Davis including his negotiating a settlement for possible retirement, a shortened season, etc.  All of these things are more important today than opening up Davis' roster spot.  Let's see what happens.
    • Also, if we keep Cobb through the winter, we will need the spot for rule 5 protection.
    • It is a happy fact that I think the Orioles will be good enough next year that they won’t need him. They need good infield defense and he doesn’t provide that.
    • Some final defensive numbers: Rtot: +15 (6th in MLB) Rdrs: -3 (19th in MLB)  UZR: -5.4 (21st in MLB) Fangraphs defense: -4.4 (21st in MLB)  Fielding %: .980 (27th in MLB) Overall, a bit better than last year but below average unless you want to believe Rtot.

    • The first tiebreaker was division record, even though they played in different divisions.  I guess since all games were East vs East, Central vs Central, West vs West... Division record = league record. If that was tied then it was record in final 20 division (league) games. If that was tied then record in final 21 div games, the. 22, the n23, and so on. Kind of silly but those are the rules.
