Road Trip to Orioles Spring Training in Sarasota, FL! (Post here if you are going to ST)

Recommended Posts

We made it to BWI. Nothing stopping us now.

Glad I realized that our priceline rental car was at the wrong airport and got it corrected before I showed up at the wrong place. Got another car at the right place. Tonight's game tickets in my pocket.

Anyone have recommendations for free parking within walking distance of the stadium? Last year, I somehow ended up parking a few blocks away on a grassy park area, following the lead of some other people I saw. There was no sign saying that parking was allowed, but I took a chance and it worked out. Not really wanting to risk that again this year!

I'll be there Friday and Sunday. If I see BobMC there, I'm getting a picture and making it my profile one on Facebook! :thumbsup1:

Sorry bro - nah gonna be there this year - I'll be in Tampa 3/13 though for O's scrubs vs. skanks.

Drove around last year looking for the cheapest deal, but could not find anything below $7.00. This year the wife is dropping me off for most games I'm attending.

I drive the SUV, bring a crowd of 5 or more and park right across the street for $20 - good deal. Easy in, easy out....

We attended our first game yesterday, a Cardinals road trip with the Nationals. Traffic management getting into the place was horrendous -- about 45 minutes to cover a mile and a half -- and handicapped parking was a long walk and an uphill ramp to the entrance. The stadium staff were great and it's a nice facility for spring training.

The outcome was as horrendous as the traffic getting there, an 11-1 shellacking by the Nationals. Beat reporter write-up Cardinals defense was sloppy; Nats defense was sharp. In the 8th, a no-name minor league pitcher (#98) loaded the bases and walked in the Nats' final run. Getting away from the stadium was a lot easier than getting in, but we stayed in our seats until the crowd had exited (about 15 minutes) and my wife brought our van up closer to the stadium to reduce my walking. Ramp was downhill too.

Today, it's a home game with the Tigers. St. Louis native, Max Scherzer, will start for the visitors. Jhonny Peralta hit 2 home runs in the away game against his former team, but Cards lost anyhow. (Keep reminding myself, it's only spring training.)

    • And I don’t mean, “I hope he’s traded.”   What are your expectations and hopes on the field? For his career, Santander is a .248/.290/.454 hitter.   Last year, he was at .241/.286/.433.   In his 37 game season in 2020, he was at .261/.315/.575.   The three projection systems published on BB-ref and Fangraphs to date project as follows: Marcel: .248/.299/.452 Steamer: .252/.301/.462 ZiPS: .259/.299/.463 All very much in the same ballpark, .751-.763 OPS, a tad above his career .744 mark.    I can’t really argue with those projections in terms of what I expect.  And of course, you have to assume there’s a significantly higher than average risk of him missing time with injury.   So, if he plays 110+ games with a .751-.763 OPS, I don’t think you can be disappointed with that.   But, on the other hand, if he gets lucky with his health, I think he could do considerably better.    I really think he was never 100% or close at any point last year, and that affected his offense and perhaps his defense even more so.   I think if he can stay pretty healthy (and I’m not talking about perfection here), it would be reasonable to hope for a .260/.305/.485 type campaign.   I don’t see him matching his .314 ISO from his short 2020 campaign, but he’s got enough power to manage a .225 ISO in my opinion.    So, I think the most likely scenario is a .750-.760 type season with a good chunk of missed time, but I’m hoping for a relatively healthy, .790ish campaign.   With far improved defense over 2021, when he really seemed slowed by his injuries in the OF.
    • Age issue?  He's gonna be a year late going into his first minor league season.  You think the Orioles are going to treat him differently because of age if he performs?
    • Buck just wanted to stay with his guys as long as he could. All managers want to win today, none want to risk their job status on a rebuild if they have a choice. Buck is no different in that regard. He had Angelos ear, which ended in some bad roster decisions.
    • Sure, it's an uphill battle for almost everyone.  But the gradient is a more steep now. I don't think it's as easy as "either good or not".  He can be better and still have to deal with the age issue.  "Sure he's having a good season but he's three years older than player X".
    • It wasn't going to be an uphill battle without the injury?  If he fully recovers then he's still the same player with the same skills and ability as before just a year behind.  In the end he's either good or not.
    • I think he earned the ending to his career he currently has.  I'm fine with him going out on a low note. He won some games with the Orioles but ultimately lost more than he won. I'm sure Trembley tried his damnest to bring Baltimore a winner. I wouldn't want Buck managing a team I was rooting for in 2022.  Would you? He did have a heck of a year in 2012 tho.
    • That’s kind of a non sequitur, isn’t it?   Even if you think he had a significant role in the Orioles’ collapse, does that mean he wasn’t trying his damnest to bring Baltimore a winner?   Did he not care about his players, or the fans?   Did he not also have a big role in their success before the collapse?
