Three 10-game winners

Recommended Posts

Would be interesting to see a modern team have its starters throw at 75% effort most of the game in an attempt to throw 300 innings a year. My guess is they'd have an ERA north of 7.00, but who knows... maybe everything we thought was progress really was insanity.

Ask Jim Palmer if he threw with 75% effort.

Yeah but because modern starters don't pitch as deep into the game as they did in the 4-man rotation era, they earn fewer decisions. So I consider 15 to be the new 20.

In 1970 starters got decisions in 73% of games. In 2014 they're getting decisions in 70.2% of games. 162/5 *.702 = 23 decisions per starter. 162/4*.73 = 29.5 decisions per starter. So almost 30% fewer decisions today, meaning 20 wins in 1970 is about the equivalent of 15.5 today.

Not quite that simple, with complications like the win rule's five inning minimum for starters, but it's something like that.

Ask Jim Palmer if he threw with 75% effort.

He probably wouldn't characterize it quite that way, but I flat-out guarantee you he'd say he paced himself and rarely threw with 100% effort. Now almost every pitcher throws at max effort all the time, which is why they go 6.0 innings/start today instead of the 6.4 of 1970.

If Gonzalez wins his final start, we will have had four 10-game winners.

Norris won his 15th game today, so we have two 15-game winners (Chen has 16 wins.)

Three 13-game winners (Tillman, in addition to Chen and Norris.)

Not bad.

Not great, but not bad.

Tillman should'a had more than 13 wins. Tough break for him. Worth noting he reached the 200 IP mark.

Gonzalez has been tough luck too, only a .500 pitcher this year.

Tillman is 13-5, but the team is 24-9 in his starts. The O's have won the last 11 times he has taken the mound.

Agreed that Gonzo seems to have had some tough luck this year. Run support for our starters:

Tillman 5.07

Chen 4.87

Norris 4.75 (before last night, so it's actually higher)

Gonzo 3.88

Jimenez 3.65

Gausman 3.39

You can see why Tillman, Chen and Norris are 44-19. They've pitched well, but they've also gotten the runs.
