Frobby

This is nothing compared to 1969

Recommended Posts

Too many people getting bent out of shape about a "Go Ravens" comment. If myself, olehippi, etc., started analyzing the Week 7 matchup on this board, I think there'd be more of a reason to complain. :P

That said, go Ravens! :)

1969 was in the World Series, ditto 1979 which was another extremely bitter loss. WADR to Frobby, who I doubt followed , and hung on, every game of 1969, unlike 2014, this one stings a lot more. I'd much rather lose in the World Series than this, but we don't get to make that decision.

P.S. I was in second grade in 1969, and I'd bet most fans here were not born yet ;)

I was I still can't believe we lost to the Mets

Well there is a board for that. Most of us have come here to discuss the Os and try to get over the loss. Those of us who are not Ravens fans don't want to hear about how "it's football season, go Ravens." I'm just saying, if you wanna talk Ravens, there's a place for that.

Colts losing to Joe Willy Namath and the Jets was much more horrific in that same year!! I can still see Earl Morrall not even seeing a wide open Jimmy Orr on that flea flicker play in the first half....Good grief!!

I agree but that was so questionable how he didn't even look Orr's way as the primary receiver and Shula had called that play I have always wondered if the rumors that the mob had threatened Earl's family weren't true as how often did he ever do anything that inexplicable before or after as he was a smart QB ?

Bubba Smith always said in interviews years later that he thought that the game had been fixed. Dont know, but there were lots of strange things, like that ball that bounced off Tom Mitchell in the end zone for an interception, that flea flicker and Shula waiting forever to put in Unitas.

Let me say, I've been traveling overseas and didn't see the last two games, or much of the first two. And while I'm annoyed to lose to a team I KNOW in my heart isn't as good as us, in four games no less, I've lived through far worse postseason disasters, especially watching the 1969 loss to the Mets. 45 years and that still stings beyond belief. This season, on the other hand, was a great one that I will look back on fondly despite the rout by the Royals. And wait 'till next year!

I wasn't even close to being alive for the Mets loss. The loss to the Royals blows hard.

Right same here. Heck at 27, I've never witnessed so much as a pennant. I understand where Frobby is coming from but this one really hurts. I really thought especially after sweeping the Tigers we could win the pennant:

Yeah Tom Mitchell was so wide open in the end zone that Earl could have lobbed it left handed for a td yet he threw it like a rocket hitting him in the shoulder pad and richocheting up in the air for an easy pick. Bad luck? Looked suspicius to me!

1969, 1971, 1979, 1982 and 1996 were all worse than this year.
Might as well throw in 1997 when we went wire-to-wire and Armando Benitez handed two games to the Indians, who would reach the WS for their first time since "some guy" named Bob Feller pitched for them. I was in Toronto for the game when we clinched the '97 division title.

'71 was the Clemente Series, and I remember little beyond that. The bigger heartbreak to me that time was Bob Short skipping town weeks before with the Senators. To this day, "We are Family" still infuriates me from 1979, my freshman semester at MD. 1982 was one day after my mother died, and my father and I went to the Friday night DH to try to feel normal. Perspective on that, baseball seemed way more inconsequential that year. 1996, I was driving back from my godmother's funeral in SC, when I heard about he who must not be named reaching over the fence in Game 1.Game 5, 1996 ALCS was probably the last game I went to with my father.

Ranking them?

1979

1997

2014.. then the rest

So having said all that, are we supposed to get some solace from this year by comparing it to other disappointments?

Well, it's not working for me. Sorry to say.

Give this a few years to see if the soreness recedes as does those other years that burn only when you really think back on them. I've seen the Orioles in the Series, my son hasn't. He's only known two postseasons in his life.

Heck, I would have taken a competitive ALCS at this point. Losing four games in a row to end the season is very hard.

Especially games so close. We lost the four games by 2, 2, 1, and 1 runs. Stings and will until the next season arrives. Gonna be a long winter.

Please take the Ravens comments to the Ravens board. We aren't all Ravens fans.

I'll take the high road......

A majority of us who were raised in Baltimore are just as much Ravens fans as we are Orioles fans, and we will hopefully find some solace for our Orioles pain in Ravens success. May you find the same in whatever football team you follow.

My father was from Baltimore (which is why I'm an O's fan in Iowa), and he could hardly speak of the '69 series or the Jets' Super Bowl win without getting visibly upset. Growing up, those were simply not mentioned in casual conversation when he was around.

For me, I was just a little kid in '69 and '70, so the '71 series is the first I really remember watching, so that one stings for me a bit.

But the '79 series was the worst. To be up 3-1, and then blow it--all with the media openly rooting for the Pirates and all that 'We Are Family' junk. To this day I hate that song. They played it at my wedding (it was a song my wife's family plays at all family occasions) and I recall refusing to dance to it, though I also recall she eventually talked me into going out with her family and being a good sport about it.

But I hated it. Every second of that stupid Sister Sledge song. Still hate it. Always will. All because of that stupid 1979 World Series. So yeah, today's not so bad, considering. At last there's no theme song to torture us for the next 35 years.

The Miracle Mets scarred me for life. Will never, ever get over that defeat as a young boy. Seeing the crying Oriole logo on the evening news after the losses haunted me for years. This does not come close IMO.

Hate "We are family" to this day as well.
