O's Interested in Juan Uribe

Recommended Posts

ESPN Insider reports that the Chicago Tribune reports that the O's are interested in White Sox SS Juan Uribe.

Do we want him and what do you think it would it take to get him?

here's a link, but I think you have to be an ESPN Insider:

They're scouting him just because he's a SS who would be available for very little (except money). If Cintron accepts their offer I think any interest in Uribe would disappear... unless the White Sox want to trade him for Jay Gibbons or something.

I don't think the Orioles want Hernandez or Fahey starting. And I don't think they'd go w/a rookie middle infield tandem, either. They'll want a veteran at one of the two positions. However, I'd like them to find one good long-term starter this yr...Cedeno, Hu, Lillbridge...somebody.

If they're so worried about having a veteran in the middle infield, they should just keep Roberts. There's no sense in trading him for a mediocre package and then going out and getting a lousy veteran who could be a bad influence on the youngsters.

I would like to see them find a good long term solution as well, but I don't think it is absolutely essential they do it this year. I think it would be a mistake to trade for Uribe because I think he would be a detriment to what they are trying to build. As Drungo said in another thread, he is Tony Batista masquerading as a SS.

Except that Tony Batista was never accused of shooting someone and then paying off the accuser to make the charges go away. :002_scool:

Two choices:

1. Long-term solution

2. Luis Hernandez.

That's how it is in my mind, anything else is unnecessary and a waste of resources. I don't like LH. I don't want him starting for us. But between him and someone with 150 more OPS points and worse defense, there just isn't a point. At least we get to watch some nice plays all season.

I'm guessing the offer to CIntron is a MiL deal and the trade of Uribe would be contingent on them NOT trading Roberts. Just a guess anyway...

In my opinion this would be an absolutely terrible move. Juan Uribe is AWFUL.

I can't put it any other way then that. He has had, literally, one good offensive year in his entire career, in which he has played in more then 100 games. He has a career on base percentage of .295.

Granted he can hit some home runs but remember they came in HR friendly The New Comiske. This is just not the way to go.

Now if they could unload one of our horrible contracts in a trade for him, then maybe. But god this guy is going to drive us crazy.

Read'em and weep.

On second thought. I still think he's a bad choice. But, in looking at Uribe, it caused me to go back and look at Cintron and I've decided I don't care for this option too much either. He has a better BA then Uribe, but his OBP sucks and he doesn't hit for much power. Plus, he's older then Uribe, believe it or not.

If the Orioles are going to try to win through improved pitching, especially the bull pen, then they need to support that young pitching witht he best defense they can get up the middle. I don't think either of these guys are the answer for that plan.

If Uribe is a supposed "answer" to our SS issues then I'd rather just let Hernadez fail miserably at the plate at be done with it. Then we can get passed this whole LHernandez thing. I'm just afraid that Uribe will slow down the search for our eventual long-term solution.

I agree with this sentiment. If we aren't able to get a long term solution for shortstop, and our choices are between Uribe, Cintron, and Hernandez, I'd just as soon stick with Hernandez.
