Manny Machado needs to reassess his defense

Recommended Posts

He is on pace to have 40 errors. Hard to put a positive spin on that.

The only thing I'll say is Tillman should have caught that ball last night. His foot was on the base and the ball hit his glove. It wasn't THAT bad of a throw.

That said, I'll make no other excuses for Manny as he has been sloppy in the field this season. He seems to like to showboat more than he should be, but didn't we all at 22?

Well it has gotten to the point where it needs to be addressed.

Also, can we get this merged into the other Machado defense thread? Please?

LOL, I made the same request, but from the other side of the tread.

I am sure Buck and the coaching staff is not sitting back doing nothing.

It really is almost alarming, considering many had him as the best defensive player in the majors the last two seasons.

AL maybe. Anyone that had him the best overall was incorrect.

SI ran a good piece on him last year it was around the ASG time frame and made a very good case for him being the best.

So you can't say incorrect, it's an opinion.

Clearly this year, his play has regress and its no longer a debater issue.

I don't see how you could realistically rate him over Simmons. Simmons is every bit as good at short as Manny has shown to be at third.

o

Manny Machado leads the major leagues errors committed as a 3rd baseman, with 8 ...... and he arguably deserves one or two more.

Nationals' shortstop Ian Desmond, on the other hand, has committed only 1 error in his last 22 games, after having committed 8 errors in his first 12 games this season.

Machado needs to reassess what kind of company that he wants to keep. :leaving:

The SI piece mentioned him, and stat wise they were neck neck.

They went with Manny, based on some unbelievable plays that he made. Again, its a perception or judgment call.

I think Manny is just getting a bit cocky because he knows how good his arm is and he doesn't focus as well as he needs to. He'll get over it.

I'd be happy to merge if I could find the other thread. Your link goes nowhere. Perhaps someone already got it?

Myself and CoC was asking the same thing, and it did get merge, into this one.

but, thanks.

I don't know if the message that Manny needs to hear is that he is too cocky. When you are in a throwing slump it is all about confidence. The last thing I want him to think is "maybe I am not as good as I think I am". It's possible there may be some work ethic issue but Buck has given no indication of that. Manny made it back from knee surgery for opening day and you don't do that if you are cocky or taking things easy. It seems to me what made him an excellent defender in 2012-14 is a little youthful confidence and I would encourage him to get it back.

The way I look at it is simple.

If two guys are even and one plays third and one plays short, you give the nod to the guy playing short.

In the end we are splitting hairs. Everyone can agree that prior to this throwing slump he was at the upper echelon.

It was also a pretty odd play for a third baseman, having to turn a double play at second and hit a moving target running to first. Don't get me wrong, he should have executed it, but it was kind of an odd play.
