I think they HAVE to sign Davis

Recommended Posts

For all his warts and high K rate, the Orioles still need to retain Davis for a few reasons.

1. They need to show the fan base that they are committed to keeping their stars.

2. They can't easily make up nearly 40 HR and roughly 100 RBI's

3. They can afford for Davis to go to Boston or even the Yankees(yes, I believe they are thinking about it even with their big contracts)>

4. The Orioles need some continuity for their franchise.

It may be a ridiculous contract, and may need to overpay, but Davis is a star and the Orioles need stars badly.

I believe that they may need to sign Parra too, but Chen and Wieters are gone.

I agree. After the debacle of an offseason the O's had this year, fans are going to be much less willing to give DD the benefit of the doubt when he starts making (or NOT making) moves after this disappointing season.

Boston is a possible destination that I have mentioned before. I'm not sure the Yankees can do the roster juggling necessary to add him to the roster. Teixeira gets $23M for another year at 1B. ARod is their $21M DH. Beltran gets $15M to play RF. Gardner is signed through 2018 in LF, along with Ellsbury through 2020 in CF.

He's valuable even as a RFer. Has the arm you want.

I would not throw a 7/175m contract at the feet of

Davis. If you want the Orioles to put their money where their collective mouth is then spend it on an ace. You constantly complain about our lack of pitching so now let's take that $25 mil per and spend it on a David Price.

I think Price will get a lot more money than Chris Davis. But if I'm wrong, I'd also take Price over Davis all else equal.

Don't forget the comp pick. Price plus a comp pick is worth a ton more than Davis. Upton plus a comp pick would be a close call. I love Davis but the collective bargaining system incentives us to let him walk and tkae the comp pick.

BEG him to accept the offer!

I take that back. Upton or anyone equivalent would cost us a comp pick, so I guess it would be a wash. Still, we have to look at all the free agent options. I am not convinced Davis will be the biggest producer or the best value.

Maybe. Hanley Ramirez has said he was told he will be the 1B next year.

With our horrible record of drafting and developing? No thanks, ill take the stud power hitting first baseman. No way we pony up for Price. Zero chance!

It depends on the (P)price. If the go after Price they will not be able to afford Davis. In any case, I like Davis but not in the #4 spot. He kills way too many rallies by not putting the ball in play. I think #5is where his natural spot is.

We don't have to sign Davis, but we do need to sign a couple of impact players. If Davis happens to be one of the impact guys they sign, fine.

I agree with this. I like CD ok, but there are a few other FA's this year that I like better. We just can't get cute this time around and think that 3 or 4 6 Million dollar players will be better than a real impact bat.

    • Might have to chalk this up to Elias. 26 man roster and we’re still playing with a 3 man bench. With the new extra inning rules do we really need all those pitchers to cover innings? We’re losing games because we need 3+ LR options at all times.    Stevie Wilkerson seems like the perfect 4th bench guy at the moment. He’s not a prospect so we don’t care about him sitting on the bench. He’s competent in the IF/OF.  He’s fast and a good base runner. He can eat an inning in a blowout by pitching. Heck, or save a game. Did that happen???
    • I said it two years ago, I'll say it again, I think John Means will start the next playoff game the Orioles play in.
    • What’s the corresponding move to activate Hays?  Looks like just a straight swap with McKenna is likely. Sulser, Lakins, or Tate, could be an option too. With playing in an NL ballpark for two games, and having two off days, we may elect to go with a bigger bench and drop an bullpen arm.
    • The ball was in the shadows and dropped like 5 ft outside of the shadows in RF for a hit. I think Franco probably couldn’t see it and got a bad read. A tough L.
    • Means Is only behind Glasnow in WAR, ahead of Cole and Bieber. Good company. I hope the breakout continues.
    • Currently, the pitching staff is 14th in WAR (in the majors), 10th best in walk rate, 17th in total ERA and 7th in BP ERA. Nice numbers considering we apparently have the worst catchers in baseball.  I’m shocked that they could be this awful defensively, game calling, framing, etc...and yet we are finding some early success after building on last year, which wasn’t as bad as suspected. It’s almost as if the catchers defense can be overcome by other factors! (Or people are just clueless as to how to actually judge a C defense)
    • The issue is that you are intentionally taking the GMs statement that the Os are not measuring success by wins as meaning something else....that the Orioles are not trying to win games. And then extrapolating that into the Orioles are trying to lose games.    That simply isn’t what is going on. And I think you know that. I think in general folks are on board with the rebuild. We are also at the point where we are about as far from being competitive as we have been in a long time.      I don’t know how much the pandemic has effected the rebuild, but minor leagues have been shut down for a loooong time.  I can’t help but think it probably cost us a full year.    I don’t know if Hyde will be the manager in 2 months or 2 years.  I really don’t worry about that at all. Right now, I just want to see the Os get better and develop talent.    I would say this is the last year the Os can continue with a mindset of we are not measuring success with wins. I think it is likely that success next year will be marked by small improvement to something along the lines of 75-80 wins.    I am trying to enjoy the moments.    The moments Mancini reminds us of what he can be. The moments Mountcastle reminds us that he could be in the mix for ROY. The moments John Means looks like a real #1 or #2. And yes the moment we get to see AR, Diaz and others crack the lineup.    It’s not the same as fretting over when Hyde rests Santander or who he pitches in the 8th or 9th. But this ain’t Toronto and whether or not we use our historically good closer in the 6th, 11th or ever. Hyde is gonna learn or he won’t. In the end, of the GM gets the talent part, getting someone to manage will be a breeze.
