He’s clearly ready enough to justify being a starting catcher in the majors.
I would be willing to bet that if you brought him soon, that he ends up a top 10 catcher in baseball by whatever overall metric you want to use.
I don’t think it’s always a benefit. It depends how ready the player is to handle the jump. I wouldn’t put someone in the pilot’s seat of a fighter jet who hadn’t mastered driving a car yet.
How ready is Rutschman? I’m not completely sure. Probably ready enough to keep his head above water. He might look like DJ Stewart with the bat if you brought him up now - which certainly isn’t horrible for a catcher.
Preaching to the choir, here, but how is this guy not in the top three in voting?
Among AL outfielders, here's how Mullins ranks:
RBI (20) - thanks to the bottom of this order
Total Bases (1)
Diaz was a top 50 guy when we got him. If you get a top 50 guy (and presumably you and your scouts love him), a potential mid to back end starter, a potential solid BP arm, I think you think long and hard about that deal.
I’m not saying he’s a complete slam dunk but if the second player was a rising guy like Bradish and you get a highly ranked guy, that’s a lot to say no to for a guy who has had 2 great months in the majors and is already 26.
There is plenty of benefit for AR. He learns, he is up here playing in the majors instead of the minors and gets to start to learn the pitchers up here. It’s always a benefit for the player to be in the majors vs the minors. He’s kind of the reason they are doing this.
And the team obviously benefits from having a far superior player to what they have now.
I see your point, and a Machado return as it existed in 2018 is probably the lowest I'd go. But we are talking about 2.5 months of success. If this is the 2021/22 offseason, and he has sustauined these numbers , I am demanding a lot more.
After busting out of the gate as some of the top teams in their respective leagues....our A to AA affiliates are starting to show some signs of regression. Nothing crazy yet, but:
Delmarva (A-): 25-15 overall, still good for first in their division, but we are now behind Tampa's team in our league and even with Milwaukee.
Aberdeen (A+): 23-18 overall, now at 2nd place in our division behind the Yankee affiliate. Tampa's team is also ahead of our pace.
Bowie (AA): 27-13 overall, best record in our league although the Yankee affiliate is right on our heels.
Norfolk (AAA): 15-24 overall, out of 20 teams in our AAA league, we have the 15th best record. That's....something.
So still good overall, but not as runaway good. Aberdeen has lost 8 of their last 11............hopefully that turns around real quickly.
