Buck losing games

Recommended Posts

Buck is giving away games with his insistence on staying too long with pitchers. And today, in a game the team really needed, he doesn't bring in Brach in a tie game in the seventh inning, instead staying with Despaigne, who had already blown the lead and was being hit hard, and saw him proceed to keep being hit hard and give the Twins the lead.

The offense is the cause. They are losing games because they aren't scoring runs. They had a good chance to blow Gibson out of the game and instead utterly failed. Not easy to win a game with a razor sharp margin of error and having to use the bullpen for 4 innings.

The clutchless offense is a huge problem. But Buck knew he'd have to use the pen tonight, and planned for it. Ubaldo got him five innings with a lead, which is likely more than Buck really thought he'd get. He chose Despaigne instead of Worley, and Despaigne was not sharp, and blew the lead right away. Instead of going with his best late game relievers in a tie game, he stood pat, and got what he deserved for not going with his best..

It comes down to roster construction and too many 5 inning pitchers. Only issue I have is if they love Roe so much then why didn't he come in sooner not that he pitched well.

I would have preferred to see someone besides Despaigne in the 7th (and in the 6th, for that matter); when you have a lead, I think you need to use your best relievers to protect it.

But in Buck's defense, he only has four good pitchers in the bullpen now that Bundy and Worley have moved into the rotation. And he only has two starters who can usually go longer than 5 innings.

Let's not mention Jones habit of getting beat deep because he's playing in.

Maybe, just maybe, he wants the back end of the bullpen rested for Toronto?
But that would be losing the battle to win the war?

I feel like he was keeping his options rested for the Toronto series. If the offense had done their job we probably wouldn't be talking about this.

Correct. We have become disturbingly un-clutch lately. Also, running into outs doesn't help matters. If we had a one-run lead in the 7th, Brach or O'Day come in. Not saying we necessarily win in that case (Twins can swing the bats) but the whole game goes differently IMO if just one more run had crossed for us in the 4th.
