Unfortunately that format is not possible in the NBA or NFL unless they dramatically reduce the number of games on their schedule. Funny enough, MLB is the one league that could easily go to an EPL format and have it work. MLB could have every team play the other 29 teams exactly six times; (three games at home and three on the road) and then have the two teams with the best overall records play in the World Series. It would be by far the best way to determine a champion because the winner would be at worst the second best team over the course of an entire season.

Too much travel. 174 games.

And then some other team won in 1955. I can't recall...

The Browns played in 6 consecutive world championship games between 1950 and 1955, winning 3 and losing 3.

In fact, Otto Graham's entire 10-year career between 1946 and 1955 always commenced in a championship game at season's end, as they won 4 consecutive AAFC titles between 1946 and 1949 prior to merging with the NFL in 1950.

I just watched Markakis knock in the go-ahead run for the Braves against the Nationals. Do you think the Orioles could use him in the outfield right now? Nick should have been an Oriole for life... I don't get it.

You can find a ton of examples of the best team not winning the NBA playoffs. Like, a ton.

Not really. I guess you can say the 2002 Lakers, 2004 Pistons, 2006 Heat and maybe last year's Cavs weren't the best teams but all of them had really good records and were worthy champions. It's certainly a lot better than an 83 win Cardinals team winning the WS a decade ago or an 88 win Giants team winning the WS in 2014.

Except you would need a best of 20+ games series in the World Series so it's not a crapshoot. I'd go even further than you. No more AL and NL, just one league of 30 teams. Determine a fixed number of equal home and away games between all the teams and take it until the end. Most years, the title would be decided with a few games in hand, but sometimes it would go down to the wire and that would really be something.

Not really.  Kim/Mancini/Smith/Rickard is fine.  Seth Smith .916 OPS, Trey Mancini .863 OPS, Nick Markakis .796 OPS.

I like excellence but at what cost?

I mean even a casual fan saw this coming before the season. Maybe if Leonard doesn't get hurt SA wins a game or 2. No drama.
