Three Run Homer

O's streak now at 13 games

Recommended Posts

Here's a remarkable fact about the O's recent slide:  the Orioles have now played 13 straight games in which they've trailed by at least 3 runs at some point of the game.  The streak started on Saturday, June 3 (5-2 loss to the Red Sox) and includes the 3 games the Orioles have won during the slide, all of which required a heroic comeback.

Perhaps it's even more notable that the O's have now played 10 straight games in which they've trailed by at least 4 runs at some point of the game, including two heroic comeback wins.

No wonder this stretch is conjuring up bad memories of 4-32 and 0-21.  The O's are falling way behind every damn game.

I have no idea whether or not this is a historic run of futility--probably we'd need Elias or someone at Project Retrosheet to spend some time on it.

It's been pretty rough lately for this team on the road. But look how they turned it around when the got back to the Yard last night. The offense racked up 5 hits, 3 walks and just 11 K's. The starter made some great pitches and went a full 5 2/3, letting up just 5 runs. A night of rest for the key guys in the bullpen.

Just needed a little of that home cooking.

I just look at the number of runs this team has allowed:

11, 5, 6, 6, 10, 14, 16, 8, 6, 6, 5, 7

yeesh.

That is so unbelievably bad. This team is done.

Ive been an Oriole fan for 55 years. Ive seen some great teams including perhaps one of the greatest teams in baseball history(1970-1971). I've seen some terrible teams. Ive seen the 0-21 88' Orioles and the 30-3 single game loss. IVE NEVER EVER SEEN WORSE PITCHING ANYWHERE....ANYTIME.

Man that looks horrible. Hard to win many games when the opponent is averaging 8.3 runs a game over that stretch.

I would say without doubt that '88 team was horrific. Worst pitching I've ever seen.

1988 Starters ERA/Slash  4.84  .276/.334/.433/.767
2017 Starters ERA/Slash  5.47  .290/.362/.475/.837

1988 Reliever ERA  3.98 .271/.351/.393/.744
2017 Reliever ERA  4.22 .269/.343/.442/.785

The numbers would say otherwise. This is historically bad pitching for the Orioles.

The numbers saw we've had far worse pitching than this.

2000 - 5.37 ERA

2006 - 5.35 ERA

2007 - 5.17 ERA

2009 - 5.15 ERA

1996 - 5.14 ERA

2008 - 5.13 ERA

1987 - 5.01 ERA

All worse than the current 4.95 ERA.    And some of those teams had stretches even more brutal than the stretch this team has been in lately.

So yes, I have no trouble remembering times when the Orioles' pitching was worse than this.   You don't even need to go back a decade to find a lot of it.

Where ERA's higher then because of rhe steroid era?

It's gotten so bad I have a habitual instinct of covering me eyes after each pitch.  Ok, not quite that bad but it's pretty damn bad man.

I went to Baseball-Reference and checked the box scores of the 1988 O's during their 0-21 start and the 2002 O's during their 4-32 finish.  The O's did not have a stretch of 13 straight games trailing by 3 or more runs during either of those episodes.  The longest such streak I could find was 8 straight games during the 0-21 episode.

Yes for the 1996 team.    Not so much the others.    Ranking the teams I listed by ERA+ (worst at the top):

2006 - 85

2008 - 87

2000 - 88

1987 - 88

2017 - 88

2009 - 89

2007 - 89

1996 - 96
