OS MLBTR 12/27

Given the dearth of rotation options, I’d like to see Lucas Long get a shot in spring training. He’d be better in relief/swingman role but I think he could get MLB hitters out, especially if limited to 2 times through the order.

...also known as: The Los Angeles Dodgers Approach to Starting Pitchers (not named Clayton Kershaw).

Works for me: 8-man bullpen with a couple of them being relievers on the Norfolk Shuttle. And be happy if you get 4 and 2/3's of an inning from the starter.

Rich Hill. No hitter though Nine.

Not sure where MLBTR got that misinformation -- the article from Roch that they've paraphrased doesn't say Hess is a lefty.

Somebody just made a mistake. As I responded to Weems, I was just being sarcastic.

Count me in the minority that wants to keep Manny

I think most of us want to keep Manny if he could be extended, I know I do.  I think they could afford the 35m year it would cost with some creativity.

But that’s not going to happen and I don’t see much benefit in keeping him for 1 more season and sacrificing a solid return.

Yeah. This is where most of us are, I think. If we can keep him long term, great. If not, trade him for the best package you can get. Makes no sense just to ride with him until he walks unless a) the deals available are less valuable than the pick we'd get or b) we win the WS.

Given where we're at, I find it highly unlikely that he's agreeable to a long term deal. Before this latest trade rumor, I'd have put the odds at 5% of him re-signing here. Now? Less than 1%.

While there are many Manny fans, I don't think he has the same fandom zeal that Brooks and Cal had here.

For one thing, he hasn’t been with the team for 20 years.    But I think some perceive Manny as a “glamor” guy while Brooks and Cal were “lunch pail” types.     I don’t necessarily think that’s fair, but that perception is out there in some quarters.

I would put Frank and Eddie in the "lunch pail" category as well.   I realize they weren't O's for life, but they are O's first and foremost.

I understand the perception has been that Manny was a party guy, not sure I buy into that theory.

Cal had an immense following from day 1, he was the hyped local boy, son of a well loved coach, heck it drew me to follow the team and back into baseball after I swore off baseball because of the senators leaving DC.

Not sure how long Brook had been around before he came known as Mr. Oriole.

I like Manny a lot, I am too young to have seen anything more than old videos of Brooks. I think Manny fandom would equal Cal fandom if he signed for ten more years and continued to play at a similar level as he’s played so far.  I  like Manny’s passion on the field, it’s different than Cal but not worse IMO.

Eddie didn't have near the fandom that Cal had.

    • Lets look at both Santander and Nunez offensively at 26 years old Season WOBA WOBACON Barrel % Hard Hit % Exit Velo XBA XSLG XWOBA XWOBACON Renato Nunez .341 .453 12.1 36.4 86.3 .228 .433 .301 .388 Anthony Santander .358 .404 10.2 36.7 88.6 .286 .510 .338 .378 MLB AVG .317 .370 6.4 34.9 88.3 .250 .414 .321 .376 They are not significantly different though Santander is ahead in the most important OBA and especially XWOBA categories.  The key here is defensively value and cost. Santander is a switch hitting plus defensive RFer while Nunez is a DH. If Nunez played any position effectively, he'd be offered arbitration. Santander's issues have been staying healthy and he doesn't walk much, but then again, he doesn't strike out all that much either. Overall, Santander is a more valuable player than Nunez and this is coming from a guy who think Nunez is worth more than obviously the rest of baseball does.
    • Late to this thread but here's mine. Santander I don't expect any more than he gave us this year before he got hurt. But that's ok. A whole healthy year, that's a solid MLer. Hays... health is the biggest question. Total wrench in the gears. In a full year I would expect BIG things from him. He's not going to hit 30 HRs, but he might hit 30+ doubles and steal 30 bases. Play a stellar CF. I like Austin a lot! For a CFer he's what you want, a take charge guy. If there's a Bermuda Triangle pop up, and he can get to it, he will scream out and call everyone off. I noticed that from his first few games up. Not intimidated when he hit the bigs.
    • The original recording has a girl speaking Spanish in the background in a sexy voice. Like 40% the volume of Burdon. At one point she says in English "Are you listening to this?" Right after 3 minutes in. This 45... on the MGM label!
    • YouTube came up with another of my favorites. That I have history with. 40 years ago my sisters and my cousins would listen to this 45 record endlessly! I was blown away by this song at 11 or 12 years old. Then 20ish years ago I found this live video online and was blown away a second time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i0DMbCKnAg click it
    • I don't know how other folks classify this... avant garde? To me this is Punk. Like Devo. An influence on Devo!
    • Then what makes you think another team would give us value for him?
