Who’s watching Ohtani’s debut?

Just saw this....he was fun to watch. 74 mph CB to Upper 90's FB. Good for him...I hope he does well.

He also has a grade 70 splitter as well, that comes in at 90mph and disappears.

He seems to have looked pretty dang good on the mound.

Now, hitting, all reports are that he's not as promising.  Do people really think he's not going to make it on that side of the ball?  I don't know what the scouts are saying, but his hitting stats in Japan really were good, at a young age too.

He’s got some swing and miss in his game, but plus or better speed and plus or better raw power. I think if he hit full time he’d be an above average COF, but it’s going to be tough to do both well.

Isn't he an 80 runner to first?

2080 baseball had him as 70 for run and arm.  40 for hit and field, and 45 for raw power.

He has some 80 times, but I’d say he’s more like a 70 runner.

He’s got more raw power than that, are you sure that isn’t game power?

Ohtani is doing some damage tonight against the Indians. I think I scoffed at the Ohtani hype all offseason, but I have to tip my hat to him if he continues to prove me wrong.

this is what I was looking at.  They did have future power at 55.

Likes to get extended; loft-type power with carry to the big part of the field. 60-grade raw power with some room for more. Power stroke to left-center field. Gets pull happy and will overswing for stretches. See him getting to above average as he gets stronger and approach improves.”

That’s from the report you linked. 60 raw with room for more lines up pretty well with my plus or better comment. The Raw Power 45/55 must be a typo, they meant game power.

I think that’s low for game power as well but there is concern his contact skills won’t play well enough to get to some of his power in-game.

It’s nice that Ohtani homered, but too much is being made of the fact that the HR came off Kluber.    It was a terrible pitch, no matter who threw it.

He's also ripping singles at 110 MPH.

The physical tools are pretty amazing.

    • There is definitely something to be said to waiting a year. If he has a healthy 2021, I would say he will be a 2-3 WAR player.  That should make him more valuable than he is now and that certainly could be part of the thinking. My only issue with that is his injury history.  I’m willing to gamble that we can get 75-80 cents on the dollar now (compared to what a healthy 2021 could bring us) vs waiting.
    • You'll get Eshelman and you'll like it.
    • Makes the games interesting at least. I think O's ownership could throw the fans a bone and try and add a few good players. Top draft picks are nice but I really hope this is the last "burn it to the ground" season.
    • You never know when the Jays will just stop spending.  Remember when they had a team in contention and their corporate ownership just flatly refused to add any payroll for the stretch run?
    • The Jays had a payroll as high as $182 mm as recently as 2016, but they’d cut it all the way to $64 mm in 2019.    They were projected at $76 mm last year before the pandemic.     Obviously, they have a lot of room to increase payroll.    Like the O’s, they’ve been clipping coupons for a couple of years.    But they are a little ahead of us on the development curve with the ascendance of their second generation major leaguers (Biggio, Bichette and Guerrero).    It’s a logical time for them to add some free agents.
    • I don’t really think this applies to Baumann anyway.   It’s not like this guy spent a year at AAA and excelled there.   He had a really good half season at AA in 2019 and then had to be shut down early at the alternate site this year.   Sure some guys like that can jump straight to the majors, but honestly I’d just make sure he’s healthy, let him start the year in AAA and consider moving him up if he’s pitching well there.   I’d probably be advocating that even if the service time issue didn’t exist, but the service time issue makes that a pretty easy call IMO.   I don’t consider it to be holding him back to test him at a level of the minors where he’s never pitched before.
