So I stopped wearing my Orioles ballcap.

Recommended Posts

Everywhere I go people were pointing at my hat and saying things like "worst team in baseball"  or "them birds are cooked". Some people just pointed to my hat and shook their heads. It's just embarrassing and depressing. So I'm back to wearing my camo ballcap now.

Go ahead call me a fair weather fan.

Should I save my O's ballcap for a few years hoping they will get better? Or should I just flush it down the toilet?

Interesting. Nobody says anything to me.

I am getting zero grief from strangers and my co-workers that are fans of other teams aren't hassling me either.

Still might get that Ghost Crab hat and use it this year, just to change things up.

I still wear mine and when someone says the O's suck I say "yup". It's not really an opinion as much as it is a fact.

When I was in graduate school at Lehman College (in the Bronx) in the Fall of 2009, one of the advisors (Yankee fan) told me that it must be embarrassing to be wearing the Orioles gear like I was doing. I told him that it's easy to wear your team's gear and wave the flag when they are doing well, but that a team REALLY NEEDS YOU  when the chips are down, like they were at that time (2009), and like they are now in 2018. A woman who was in the room looked at the two of us, motioned towards me and said, "I want HIM on my side." Unbeknownst to me, she happened to be my professor for the class that I was about to start in the upcoming semester.

And thankfully, I have eternal visual proof that I support my team(s) through thick and thin, as the dated photo below (from September of 2009) shows.

I wouldn't advise flushing it if you want to avoid a large plumbers bill.

I like the idea of wearing a mask while wearing the hat. Seems like a sensible compromise.

Those Ghost Crab hats are nice, I'm going to grab one too. I'll still wear my O's cap too.

Out of curiosity, where was this? Whenever I wear my Orioles hat in public, nobody ever says anything.

Post about team pride then show a pic of you hiding your face? It's a cool pic, just find the irony funny. Not meant to be a jab. It's a cool story bro.

There may be good years, and bad years, but this is life too. Not every year is sweet, not every season is enjoyable. But I'll never, ever, stop loving my birds.I will wear my hat with pride, and I will try and watch my team when I choose now, and look towards the future. This team will not resemble the team we will have next year. Many will not return, but like life, changes are both inevitable and the only way to make progress. Im an Oriole fan, today, now, and forever. I don't tell what anyone else to do...but I'll still love my team. Its a love that will never die.

Thanks.

The thing about the mask is that I always wear it to all games at home and on the road, except for Yankees Stadium (the only Major League or Minor League Stadium that I have been to that does not allow masks.) So I continued to wear it in the franchise's Renaissance period (2012-2016), as well as in the hard and trying times.

    • That all seems reasonable to me..and it’s also why it’s crazy to say a player must dominate to get a promotion.  My guess is if that was the criteria, we would rarely see promotions and players would never get out of the minors.
    • Here’s my rough definition of dominant: - ERA under 3.00 or more than a run lower than league average, whichever is lower. - K/9 at least 20% above league average.  - H/IP of 0.9 or less (8.1 H/9) - K/BB of 3.0 or higher A pitcher can do a lot less than that and still be very deserving of promotion, but that’s what I’d call dominant.   It’s a tough standard.   Zac Lowther was EL pitcher of the year and yet met only one of those four criteria (6.2 H/9).    He came close on ERA (2.55 was 0.98 below league average).    His K/9 and K/BB did not meet the standard.    Only eight major league pitchers met my standard last year: Bieber, Bauer, Darvish, Lamet, DeGrom, Maeda, Cole and Carrasco.
    • We didn’t rush anyone before.
    • Crazy that he is 22 already.  He turns 23 in September.  It’s time for him to start making strides on his command and control and push himself up to the majors.     Gotta figure if it doesn’t happen within the next year or so, that it may not happen at all.  Not that he can’t be a MLer but the ceiling is lowered significantly imo if he doesn’t show a lot of improvement soon.
    • Start Lowther at triple A . I want Os management to do this right unlike the Calvary. If he’s dominating there then bring him up but I am not about rushing prospects anymore if we are banking on these guys . Same with Rustchman. I wouldn’t be upset if he DOES NOT make his debut this year .
    • Ok great.  I’m glad to have heard you’re stance for the 15790th time.  It was so enlightening.
    • Obviously but it’s based off of what value they get by trading back and not by what’s available IMO. If they can trade #13 for a late one and early #2 (Jacksonville) they will absolutely do it imo! As that’s how they do things.    The rest of my argument is fact until he proves otherwise. It’s funny to me that you so arrogantly scream your wrong and I’m right and then argue both sides of the QB debate. I agree that you have to wait and see, and there is at least a chance all be it small that he drastically improves in accuracy and touch outside. But, I’m not banking on it and based on your previous wait and see position you aren’t enough to throw 100MM plus at him right now. Are the Ravens willing, we shall see but I think their actions speak louder than words as far as it happening now. The next two weeks as mentioned by EDC are gone and we haven’t heard anything else. But, I also know Harbaugh can be stubborn and is probably pushing for it thinking he can run them to the Super Bowl. I think it’s pretty obvious that it can get them to the playoffs but becomes a house of cards once there.
