Has there ever been a player at Davis level

It's true we got a relative bargain on Machado.  But I think your "blue book value" for WAR isn't really borne out in reality when you're talking about large WAR numbers, there's a bit of a discounting effect that goes on at those large numbers.  Nobody's getting paid $60 million a year even in this day and age.  Also, you have to consider the sheer depth of Chris Davis' ineptitude.  If it was just that he'e merely replacement level -- which, mind you is still very, very bad and way below league average -- it wouldn't be so outrageous.  It's that his presence on the roster is making the team way worse than even your typical Joe Schmoe from the minors.  Outside of the occasional nifty scoop of a poor throw from Pedro Alvarez, he does very little to help the team and is actively hurting them.  The Orioles paying Chris Davis all this money is like paying a roofer to destroy your brand new roof and fail to replace it with anything.  It's like paying a doctor to shoot you and leave you to bleed out.  It would be much better to pay him to do nothing...instead right now he's getting paid to help the team lose.

You nailed it. And gallows humor is pretty much all we have left.

I would love to know how far "productive" players can fall (in terms of dismal performance over a certain # of plate appearances) at age 32 and still recover their heights. The only thing I could remember was David Ortiz's half-season swoon in 2009 at age 34 before being awesome for 6 more years. Pretty sure that's not a great comp, though..lol. Davis has been declining for 1.5 years plus.

I am fine running Davis out there until the All-Star break and seeing if he can fix himself, but after that I would love to see us eat sunk cost and move on.

There is almost no doubt that this is going to go down as the worst contract in O's history and one of the worst in the history of major league free agency.  The sad thing is, an overwhelming percentage of the arm chair GM's that make up this message board have been predicting that from that the date that it was signed.

The only ones surprised by this unfolding are the O's FO, no doubt.

I think we all thought it was an overpay. I don't think anyone thought he would be this bad, this quickly. Heck, even as of last year, I didn't think he would get any worse. And yet, he has somehow managed to lose 200 points of OPS from what was already an extremely frustrating .215/.732 195 K 2017.

Found this video on twitter today. Kinda make me wonder if there is something going on between Trumbo and Chris Davis. I thought it was really weird at the time.

Saw that too. I just interpreted it as Chris being down on himself (he smashed his bat in the A's dugout the following game I believe). He is definitely not a happy camper out there but I highly doubt anything personal there.

My guess is Trumbo pinched Davis' nipple.

And by the way, not only is Davis possibly the worst hitter in baseball right now, he is batting 4th behind Manny!!! 3 games in a row vs OAK, Buck takes the bat out of Manny's hands, O's lose all three games. Did batting 4th help Davis get on track at all? 1 for 13. I think Buck is just trolling the fan base at this point.

I know I'm going to get blasted for this but batting Davis 4th is moronic. Buck is a smart guy so you have to wonder if he's just doing it for his own amusement at this point. There's no logical explanation.

Couple of home runs. Has he figured it out?

I am not getting my hopes up but I thought it was a good sign that the last one went opposite field. It looked like he was trying to go that way earlier in the AB too.

He looks way more confident at the plate. He hit every ball last night with some authority. Not getting my hopes up either, but always felt a big cause of his issues was mental.

    • Lets look at both Santander and Nunez offensively at 26 years old Season WOBA WOBACON Barrel % Hard Hit % Exit Velo XBA XSLG XWOBA XWOBACON Renato Nunez .341 .453 12.1 36.4 86.3 .228 .433 .301 .388 Anthony Santander .358 .404 10.2 36.7 88.6 .286 .510 .338 .378 MLB AVG .317 .370 6.4 34.9 88.3 .250 .414 .321 .376 They are not significantly different though Santander is ahead in the most important OBA and especially XWOBA categories.  The key here is defensively value and cost. Santander is a switch hitting plus defensive RFer while Nunez is a DH. If Nunez played any position effectively, he'd be offered arbitration. Santander's issues have been staying healthy and he doesn't walk much, but then again, he doesn't strike out all that much either. Overall, Santander is a more valuable player than Nunez and this is coming from a guy who think Nunez is worth more than obviously the rest of baseball does.
    • Late to this thread but here's mine. Santander I don't expect any more than he gave us this year before he got hurt. But that's ok. A whole healthy year, that's a solid MLer. Hays... health is the biggest question. Total wrench in the gears. In a full year I would expect BIG things from him. He's not going to hit 30 HRs, but he might hit 30+ doubles and steal 30 bases. Play a stellar CF. I like Austin a lot! For a CFer he's what you want, a take charge guy. If there's a Bermuda Triangle pop up, and he can get to it, he will scream out and call everyone off. I noticed that from his first few games up. Not intimidated when he hit the bigs.
    • The original recording has a girl speaking Spanish in the background in a sexy voice. Like 40% the volume of Burdon. At one point she says in English "Are you listening to this?" Right after 3 minutes in. This 45... on the MGM label!
    • YouTube came up with another of my favorites. That I have history with. 40 years ago my sisters and my cousins would listen to this 45 record endlessly! I was blown away by this song at 11 or 12 years old. Then 20ish years ago I found this live video online and was blown away a second time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i0DMbCKnAg click it
    • I don't know how other folks classify this... avant garde? To me this is Punk. Like Devo. An influence on Devo!
    • Then what makes you think another team would give us value for him?
