TT: Silence of Ownership is Deafening

Recommended Posts

I admit that all of these thoughts are crazy, but until something happens I am prone to musing things like:

Maybe Peter is not as fully removed from big decisions as we may think.

John, Louis and maybe even mom aren’t on the same page on how to proceed.

The family is actually lining things up for a sale.

Yep.   And John & Lou have been in charge for a few months.

I hope they come out and give the kind of vision statement people are asking about ... at the press conference where the new President & GM are introduced.    If they don't it will be an indication that they are going to continue their father's tradition of not communicating with the public.

Doing it in the middle of a search would be silly.

Ownership saying something would be silly? We definitely disagree.

They don’t have to give the fans exact details on what they are doing.  But a press conference would have been a much better gesture to the fans than the press release.  Just say our bad and take a few questions from the media.

I have asked this question several times, in slightly different forms, over the course of the past season. To the best of my recollection, there's never been a substantive response, beyond the observation (which I share) that John seems like a decent and well-meaning guy, based on public appearances.

John has been Executive VP of the Orioles for almost 20 years, but I don't know of any positive contributions he has made. As I've observed before, it appears that neither has ever had a job that their father didn't give them and that neither appears to have ever said or done a thing to express disagreement with or dissent from the terrible decisions Peter Angelos has made as owner of the Orioles.

He's been EVP on the business end.  That was originally Duquette's gripe with wanting to leave Baltimore for Toronto- he was going to be on charge of both, not just baseball ops- while the argument Angelos had going was, under his leadership structure, Duquette was at the top in a similar position to the one in Toronto.

Not trying to defend anything to this point, but if you believe in the theory that the brothers have been assuming power/influence and that Peter has been out of the decision-making process since January, then you will see some of the changes that he implemented this year:

1.) Kids Cheer Free

2.) Fireworks during the Fridays where school was out, not just once a month

3.) Increase in higher quality giveaways

4.) Starting to do "promotion nights" for various groups/interests/colleges/entertainment, etc

5.) Increase in STH benefits (more of which seem to be coming, judging from the survey)

This list involves a lot of things other teams have been doing (increased STH benefits, higher quality giveaways) and getting on the train with promotion nights, which teams have gradually flocked towards.  The big one is Kids Cheer Free, which is a radical decision

Now, they have already hired a new EVP to replace John in the summer, so it seems he is going to be the point person for the organization moving forward.  This new hire may have even more radical changes in mind, including an open air concourse and party decks- https://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2018/07/03/orioles-tap-longtime-sports-exec-to-lead-all.html

All of that is why I am still intrigued as to how this will play out.

They are not crazy at all.  You have to think that the people they are interviewing are asking those type of questions.  If it were me, I would ask for an update on Peter's health.  Would be have tempted to say if Pete is still breathing I am not interested, or at least at a minimum you need everything including roles/responsibilities, the limits on your decision making before I signed on with the O's.

I can imagine the part of the interview where they say, "Do you have any questions about us or the position?"

Brady probably gets talked about a lot if his name didn't come up earlier as a topic of discussion in the hiring process.

Wonderful job taking a quote completely out of context.  You must be very proud of yourself.

“Every team is going to win 54 games, every team is going to lose 54 games. It’s what you do with the other 54 games that matters.”

That’s the adage that came to mind when I saw the green monster standings. 47 wins. Brutal.

This is from another thread, but thought I'd put it out as a TT.

I couldn't have said it any better,  thank you Tony.  We as fans need to scream to the owners to do something or at least give us an explanation.

I see no point in making statements to the fans.  Will that change peoples ideas?  No Those that are always pessimistic and doom of the franchise will either say see I told you they won’t make the smart move if it is one they want will say yeah right I’ll believe it when I see it they are always just talking and won’t do it.  Those that are positive will like the move andthink the team will turn it uaround quicker then it will be or if is a move they don’t like say well let’s see what he does with his move.   During the trade deadline names were leaked who we might get the the optimistic people thought we would get this huge haul, the passmistic people said we get junk and the front office can’t do anything or won’t make a single trade.  In the end the leaks meant nothing and we got in the middle not an amazing return but also made some moves that brought some young guys that could help in future.

The real statement was accruing the most International money, and whiffing on the big 3 that were left. ;)

Not singling you out, but this statement has/was made by the pessimist group on here for every Free Agent that the Orioles missed on.  As with any signing that is not through a draft, the players get to make the choice not those doing the courting.  They did not want to come here.
