Orioles hire Mike Elias as Executive Vice President and GM

Recommended Posts

Assuming this is true (seems strange that no one else is reporting it), I hope it means Carlos Beltran will be invited to join the organization in some capacity.

So we get the Astros assistant Gm and special assistant GM. Both are into analytics. We had lost our top analytics person to the Astros this offseason.

Great hire. I don’t care if Brady will still be in whatever role he is in. Let him have it.  For all we know he could’ve made this hire????

Does this mean that he would hire  HOU people to fill out the coaching staff?

Manager - Trey Hillman (Hou bench coach), or their PC/HC?

Pitching Coach - Craig Bjornson (Hou bullpen coach)

Hitting Coach - Alonzo Powell (HOU asst HItting Coach)

It would be like how NFL teams lose people after winning the super bowl. We’d get their #2 & #3 Front office people. Then their #2, #4, and #5 of their coaching staff. Or something like that. That would be a coup. Especially if/when Elias brings the player development and scouts  with him.

Great news. Now we actually have something to talk about on here.

The Houston Chronicle has an article on it.

So do other papers, but they are all reporting that Nightengale reported it. So far, he's the only source.

This makes me feel like things are changing for the better. Young, bright mind out of a great analytical organization.

An organization that knows how to cheat too.  :awesome: When they can get away with it*

*When they can gain an edge.

So Roch insisted that we are hiring the Pres first. He’s just a garbage reporter isn’t he?

If true, this is very encouraging. But I still wanna see how the rest of it shakes out.

Melewski says,

We’ll see if this report proves accurate and the report does not indicate whether Elias would be No. 1 in the baseball operations department or work under or alongside a team president or someone with a similar position.

Rich Dubroff and others think this guy could be manager if Elias is hired.

If Elias is named as Duquette’s successor, he’ll have to find a new manager. Buck Showalter was also dismissed on Oct. 3. The Orioles will have no competition in their managerial search since all five teams that were in the market for a new manager have already filled their vacancies.

One name that could surface is Joe Espada, Houston’s bench coach, who interviewed for the job with the Texas Rangers and was also eyed by the Los Angeles Angels.

No one has confirmed this story, so IF true, Nightengale had this several hours before anyone in the media.  Usually by now, @Moose Milligan's hero Rosenthal or Jon Heyman or someone confirms this.

May I be the first to show optimism?  :deadhorse:

Sounds like this is legit! And good news.

Roch said he heard a decision had been made but couldn't get the name.

Since we haven't heard from the Orioles perhaps we will get a dual announcement that includes a President. Likely Cherington or Colletti

if it's Cherington @mdbdotcom owes me a steak dinner😎

I just think you're jealous at my capacity to let things slide.  You're the one who's held a grudge for over 30 years.  I'm a lover, not a fighter baby.

    • I've really enjoyed the prospect lists. The prospect lists are my favorite thing to look forward too. There's so few sites that offer such great information about organizational prospects especially many that aren't on many of the top lists. I'm really interested to see Welk in his first full season and how quickly the organization pushes him given his age. Also, I wonder if they think about moving Blaine Knight who I think is probably too small to move forward as a starter and Hanifee to the pen? I really hope that Hanifee who is a local kid who grew up in Cecil before moving to Virginia takes a step forward next year.
    • I've been intrigued by Cotton. IIRC, I believe Gagnon is close to signing with a Korean team.
    • I would say Hernaiz, but Tony was so high on him that he is already pretty high up the list.  If Stauffer comes out next year and shows he can hold his stuff and perform as a starter, he's basically Kremer with a better changeup. So that'd be a jump. McLarty or Welk are potential jumpers, McLarty could easily to come out a throw 92-95 with average or better command and a solid 3 pitch mix as a starter, that would part him in as a #5 SP projection. Which would put him as a 45 (11-17th in this year's list). Welk could show he is an average glove at 3B, 55 hit, 45 power, that's probably a second division 3B, a 45 (11-17th in this year's list). Fenter is kind of a similar skill set as Baumann (curve instead of slider out pitch) but a little less stuff, so if he moves fast and performs he could be Baumann with a little more age and relief risk. That's a 45. I won't list guys off the 30 because I don't want to spoil a future article, but needless to say there are plenty of potential jumpers there. To respond to @Frobby's post, when I sent my personal 30 to Tony to start the process of integrating our thoughts, I included 20 guys that I had in the same tier as the last 4 guys on my 30. My tiers are a little different than the final list.
    • Also it is amazing that we lost our pitching and bullpen coach because Brady thought they were the reason Wright wasn’t succeeding.
    • I predict he gets shelled in the KBO.  He is no Tyler Wilson.
    • I don’t see that at all.
    • Buck was making something like 4 million a year.  Hyde probably makes several million less than that. Elias probably makes less than DD.  Brady’s salary is gone.  I am sure they are highly profitable. When the Astros were tanking they were most profitable team in MLB.
