Josh Donaldson or Mike Moustakas?

I guess it comes down to - would the prospects they expect to get in return be worth the money to sign Moustakas or Donaldson. How would the prospects they get back compare to what the O's could just sign on the International Market for the same amount of money? That's not accounting for the risk that they get hurt or perform below expectations, too.

It's not just a prospect comparison. It's also about how they use that money if they don't sign a big name free agent. If it allows them to hire more international scouts that alone will probably be more valuable to the team (long term) then any potential investment in middling prospects. As long as the money doesn't go back into the pockets of the owners I think they'd be better spending it elsewhere.

This is exactly what the Yankees did with Alodris Chapman the year the Cubbies won it.  You're banking on them to be trade-able.   I don't have a problem with fliers like these, but they can't be too expensive and I would think that it would be a more suitable idea when we were on the verge of contention with maybe some "disposable" cash.  I don't think we have that right now, but I love these kinds of ideas and I no longer feel alone having them.😉😄

When you have money to burn you can play this game.

I think that's almost EXACTLY what I said...

I'm not that surprised, but I think the casual fan attending games will be more tied to the team winning then the team signing a player like Donaldson or Moustakas. I just don't think either of them can help put a dent in the win / loss record that's on the horizon. I also don't think the Orioles are a team savvy enough to flip a player for a big return. At least not yet.

Could be. It was just food for thought. I'd still l ije to see Jose Iglesious. I know they will lose probably alot. But the losing isn't what kept me from tuning in. It was losing sloppy.

I see what you’re thinking, but the $$ needed for that kind of gamble is being reallocated to infrastructure in analytics and international recruiting...holy cow, I sounded like Dan Duquette. Neither one, thanks.

When was the last time someone signed a good player to a multiyear contract purely as trade bait? Someone who actually values their services will pay more.

Why would the player in question sign on for something like that?

Say they could be had on 1 year deals, who would you prefer? Donaldson has a higher upside and could bring a nice return at the deadline if he regains what he was pre-injur6.

Moustakas has been consistent in what he is and has stayed healthier than Donaldson.  I would like the Orioles to sign a guy like Donaldson and maybe Jose Iglesious to play SS.

Keep in mind, the Moustakas and Donaldson idea is solely for trade bait. I have no unrealistic ideas that they are contending with either.

Baltimore has always been a place where hitters seem to be able to turn their careers around. Well, until we give them long-term deals after.

Not sure why either or them would want to sign a 1 year with the worst team in baseball, and then wait to get traded to a contender. Why wouldn't they just sign directly with a contender? It's not like the Orioles are going to outbid everyone.

This.  I doubt we are or should be willing to outbid an actual contender one of these guys on the free agent market.

And with a team that lost more games than any other team and (likely) won't showcase or help you realize the max value.

I don't see it making sense for either side either.

I don't know. That's why I said a 1 year deal. You don't have to think the idea makes sense. But please don't twist my words. Thanks.

Wins and losses doesn't mean a player can't be productive. See Manny Machado.

Moustakas did just that this past off-season.

He resigned with the Royals, a much different proposition.  He was also burdened by a QO.
