Give Sisco another Chance

Last night, Sisco was thrown out on the back end of an ill-advised double steal with two outs in the first inning, and then in the third inning he made a critical throwing error after tagging home on a bases loaded force play.   The throw to 1B bounced, Davis couldn’t handle it, and two runs scored.    The second runner initially was called out, but replay apparently showed that Sisco hadn’t applied the tag.    Not exactly a stellar night.

The knock on him was always defense, but it was supposed to be compensated for by his offense.

I think the concern about the throwing is overblown but geez, you have to be able to tag guys at the plate.  That's literally at least a run.

Buck worried a lot about certain particular things and a lot of them seemingly had to do with catching.  I'm not worried if they have to let a pitcher bat at some point this season.  Also pinch hitters are a thing.

Right, at the end of the day, in the emergency situation where you lose the DH, you just let the pitcher bat and play NL baseball or late in a game you PH.

Severino likely isn’t as good as he’s playing right now, but there is bat speed and power there.

Looking at the statcast data, he’s earning his production, he hasn’t been lucky on balls in play.

His approach has changed, he’s swinging less overall, chasing less, but swinging more often then ever at balls over the heart of the plate.

While the safe money is always on regression from an early season career best performance, this does look like the signs of a real breakout. Perhaps not to the level he’s at right now, but above what he’s shown in the rest of his pro career.

Thanks for saving me the time. All I can add is ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ THIS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Sisco's poor defensive tag was not just on his poor throwing (which is really bad at 2.10 pop time). It was on things like tagging, game awareness, framing (he's only good at pulling in balls across his body and bringing them in for extra strikes) and his blocking is not great.

He's just a below average defensive catchers cross the spectrum really.

Could he learn second? He’s not very big and seems pretty agile.

Agile is not a word I would use around Sisco. I'd probably try 3B before 2B.

Your description of his defense doesn't lend confidence that he'd handle any position that requires anything resembling "slick" fielding. Seems like a Corner Outfield, if that, profile.

This is mentioned in other draft threads many times, but it really is refreshing that we're apparently drafting guys who can hold their own on defense. As much as I like Mancini, Mountcastle, Sisco and Stewart, there are only so many places to stash guys who can hit but not really provide positive value in the field. I'd be willing to trade any/all of them if another team overvalued their bats.

Yeah, both plays were completely horrible boneheaded plays.  Hyde was asked about the double steal at the end of his post-game interview - He made it clear it was not his call and blamed it on the base-runners.  In that case, he really needs to lay down the law on Sisco.  I like Sisco's potential, but he can't be in the lineup next game - just can't allow 2 plays like that at the major league level without accountablity.

I wasn't watching live, but the replays of Sisco weren't pretty. However, it looked like a young guy on a historically bad team trying to make something happen. I hope Sisco has more baseball smarts than displayed last night...and I'm certainly willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. The 2019 Orioles present their own unique challenges for a player trying to break in.

Broxton played after an impromptu fireside chat with Santander.

I'd probably need to watch more of the O's to get that, so I'm guessing I'm better off.

Broxton chatted up Santander in the outfield and allowed a baserunner to advance a base.

Thanks.  Yeah, players gotta be held accountable for this kind of stuff unless management decides to charge minor league prices.

Hyde really doesn't have a lot of options with a short bench, but I do agree that I'd like to see hi start t hold these players accountable with either benchings or being pulled from games.

I can't really hold him very accountable for this team, but it will bare watching how he deals with these continued bone-headed plays from players.

I didn't see the interview, but this doesn't tell me which runner called for the double steal. It can't be both of them, can it?

And I don't understand how Hyde can let these guys call their own double steal in that situation.

Hyde's got a hard, thankless job, but his inexperience is really showing at times.

Just want to clarify here, as the "but" in your sentence may be saying something you don't intend.

Are you suggesting that he's been poor offensively?  In the incredibly limited sample size since he's been called up he's got a .987 OPS.  Again, SSS, but that SSS is very strong.
