Is it worth the risk for the A's to do a major league contract. I was very surprised at his college numbers.

Not for that kind of money. He really is slight BTW.

I think it might, honestly. Dude's college numbers are impressive and using options, he can always be developed.

He's very raw.

It isn't that easy to develop raw guys, look at Bubba Starling.

If he's actually 5'8" how can he be a first round pick in the NFL?

I guess that the success of some of his size and style guys makes them dream. I saw the Heisman photo.  Even if it is a bad angel, he can't be actual 5 9'.

Bubba is a phenomenal athlete. That's why there are only 800 to 900 MLB players at a time. It's real tough. And skills don't seem to all project.

How is it that MLB is allowing the A's to spend more on their 1st round pick than anyone else?  I don't understand why the favoritism

I believe the O's had a similar option with Pat Connaughton.

I saw on twitter an OU staffer say he was 5-9 7/8 with socks on before the season started.

I saw him stand by a guy 6'2" and he was 5 to 8 inches shorter. Must have been the shoes.

Quote

He declared for the 2019 NFL Draft and reportedly told the Oakland Athletics he wants to pursue his football career. Yet when asked whether he would attend the NFL Scouting Combine, or whether he’d be at spring training, all Murray had for an answer was crickets.

It's official, going to the NFL.

Shame, baseball loses what could be a good one.

Shame the A's lose the pick but at least they get the signing bonus back.

    • One of my favorites from them/him. I'm still pretty torn up by all this. Him and Anthony Bourdain both, messed me up they were so f-ing stupid...
    • Looks like an Israeli company has developed a test, hope it can be mass produced quickly.
    • Echoed.  I heard beat reporter Susan Slusser on the FG team preview podcast call Kemp the favorite.  Their lineup except Olson is exclusively RHH, so Kemp gets the edge on Barreto/Mateo there.  Plus they have Neuse hopelessly blocked by Chapman so they had him goofing with 2B Moustakas style last September.  And they took a Rule V infielder. Hanser Alberto might be Oakland's fourth string 2B. I am almost positive Oakland will keep whichever of Barreto/Mateo they like best to succeed Semien, who despite being beloved has likely played his way out of their price range. MLBTR has summarized: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2020/02/athletics-second-base-franklin-barreto-jorge-mateo-2020.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MlbTradeRumors+(MLB+Trade+Rumors) The Tigers have Schoop, so if I'm figuring correctly we should have a shot at first claim if we want.  Perhaps Luke is thinking of just the right lowball token guy right now.
    • I put up a better version I have on my harddrive
    • 3 years before he put it on vinyl! 1973. This is really the version that runs thru my head... besides the commercial version you've heard 10,000 times. Skip this^^^^^ Watch this one! vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv
    • That’s a worthwhile take, and not something to entirely rule out.  They pitch with different levels of maturity today so perhaps you’re more right than you think, but I value the speed changing ease that Hall can utilize and their stuff is otherwise close to even.  Ranking them closely is intelligent and there’s data to support you too.  Still, it’s hard to not have Hall higher due to ceiling height potential alone....it could end up higher and he’s further from his peak than Baumann is; two significant factors.   I don’t see him thriving at Norfolk initially either and he may not be in the class of their rotation at the season’s start.  8 to 13 starts into the year however it might be a case of him going up and never looking back.   Strong supporters of him like you and I probably expect this on some level.  That’s a mean 1-2 punch and I’m happy to have both in our colors.  I want lots of innings and lots of learning if there’s adversity.  Ornery Baumann could be devastating and having him in a tier by himself is logical.
    • Also remember this isn’t a guy who sits 90-91.  He can roll mid 90’s for innings and show stuff to mix off of it and finish.  It’s hard to not pull for a guy who’s so obviously trying to maximize his skills along with his focus.  If he’s taken to coaching and his control can go from decent to elite level he may get even better.  Mound presence plus stuff and command make for a nice window.
